Is success in politics based not on making sense, but on telling people what they want to hear so you become the center of attention, get resources to maintain a reputation, and can continue using those resources to keep telling people what they want to hear?

Success in politics is to get the majority indoctrinated/selfish Americans to still vote for you even though our political system is totally broken

Its whos the best salesmen

Professional politics is not a business. It's a profession.

It's a business, but it's not supposed to be.

Ask all the politicians who've literally made themselves millionaires off the government dole and their positions (often 'inside' positions) in government.
And that's totally irrespective of party affiliation. These people get into this profession to make a buttload of money - and buttloads of money they definitely haul away during their tenures.

….and to top it off we have the gall to call other countries governments corrupt…..

Well, truth be told, most of them are. That's the fundamental problem with politics. And the longer a government exists, regardless the principles on which it is founded, the natural progression of it is to deteriorate into corruption.

This is in fact one of the truths driving the principles that went into the creation of our form of government and Constitution.

...and of course, those principles have been eroded so much over the years and decades that we find ourselves where we are today, with the swamp that exists today in most of our larger governing bodies.

I would like to see more national referendums on important issues that the people vote on directly. Take it out of the hands if the politicians

We are worse, imo, we wag our finger at the others while holding a hand behind our back to receive the money with….

There is a reason that being a politician has about the same amount of respect as lawyers and used care salesmen. Serious trust and other character issues.

Ok, whatever. What's your solution?

Pitchforks and torches………….same solution that’s been played over and over again in recorded history.

Success in politics requires many abilities. To be an elite politician - one who manages to worm his way to the top of the political dung heap - requires the following skills:

1. Mendacity. You have to be a highly skilled liar.

2. Demagoguery. Appealing to common prejudices always seems to work, e.g. Bernie "billionaires", Trump "immigrants", etc.

3. Acting. When something bad happens you have to be able to go on teevee and pretend you give a shit about the people who have been harmed or injured.

4. Deal making. You need to be able to successfully sell political favors for money or blocks of votes offered to you by various lobbyists. You also need to be able to make deals with other politicians.

Some necessary personal characteristics are:

1. Total lack of compunction. All states do terrible things, and you can't let that bother you one bit.

2. You need the ethics of a used car salesman.

3. And the morality of a child molester.

You see Vegas, Our Founding Fathers weren't that naïve

Professional politics is not a business. It's a profession.

That is debatable, but politicians are well known for promising to deliver (provide?) goods and services which is a business activity.

How professional is making promises to deliver (provide?) goods and services, yet not doing so?
