I am agnostic. I never believed in God, except I have always been an ardent supporter of radical right-wing religious fundamentalism because it is awesome. I like the nice, peaceful communities that it seems to produce and I agree with it's practicioners on how the country should be run. However, the religious right is losing their power. They have lost control of the country and are therefore losing their appeal as a deterrent against hysterical left-wing political activism. Now, radical Islamic jihadists simply have something about them that screams potential. To begin with, I would have no qualms about pretending to "see the light" and swearing allegiance to Allah as my savior. However, I see things I don't like. For starters, I would have to give up bacon and alcohol. Additionally, I would have to adopt annoying prayer rituals. On a side note, they also have some bizarre practices that I would have to look the other way on because they are weird, disgusting and unpalatable. For example, I have no desire to see perfectly good women being stoned to death for being raped. That makes no sense. The question that remains is if the Muslims went through a reformation, could they be a positive direction in this country? The Jews are too far to the left, so I see no interest in Judaism.

I think religions, overall, have a positive effect on our society when kept separate from government.

When you're in desperate need for a really ignorant way of looking at things especially right wing views on religions. Apparently we need look no further.

If this is how you think of muslims then do us a favour and stop thinking..

Are you going to look away when a family decides to engage in genital mutilation on their daughter?

You dont want to give bacon and beer, God and his glory is much more than that

If religion is seen as nothing more than rules one must follow, it's just being exploitative.

which religions stay out of politics?

Check out Buddhism, it's pretty fascinating because they believe there is no death but rather a cycle of death and rebirth. In other words you are merely reborn and every life in which you're reborn into is a better and more perfect life because you are a better and more perfect being than the previous until finally the soul reaches that ultimate goal of nirvana, an end to all suffering.

I have an open mind towards Islam. I simply don't know enough about it and have no way of gaining first hand knowledge. I am, however, reading of some very backwards Muslims and they probably do exist.

Don't get me started on religions. Nothing wrong with people meditating and practicing yoga but when you believe in heaven and hell and all that garbage you've lost me. Angels with halos and people resurrecting? C'mon now.

Another belief system I started looking into is Zoroastriansim. However, they are almost gone and shun people who are not of Iranian heritage, which might explain why they are almost gone.

I personally think the religious right is as strong as ever. It is just more diffused than it was when you had Falwell and Robertson leading the charge.

I agree, at least in my experience with Christians from what I can see around me. I am not knowledgeable enough about other religions to express an opinion.

"Alt-right tiki torch seeks submissive, bigoted, tolerant of bacon and alcohol Muslim woman for fun and adventure. No Jews!!"

I realize the OP was sarcastic, but I'll try to reply anyway. The Christian right is bonkers. There are profoundly good things about Christian fundamentalism, but the CR has buried them all so it can focus on hating homosexuals and trying to make women reproducing slaves.

The CR has inspired the atheist left to extreme levels of intense hatred. It's all completely nuts. It all should be swept away by a flood or a virus.

Coulda fooled me.

I thought you were the guy looking for a religious replacement to take over the power/influence of the religious right in the government.

The OP was not sarcastic and I sincerely apologize if it came off that way. Also, I hate the negative stereotyping of religious people as stupid. I'm sure there are plenty of religious people a heck of lot more intelligent than I am. I genuinely find myself in agreement with the religious right despite my agnosticism. I also realize it may sounds weird to look at religions as a source of folktale based wisdom to selectively choose from regarding philosophy, except I believe religion is exactly that, history based folk wisdom that people have written down over the years.

I am looking for someone to fill the void they may be leaving since they are becoming less effective.

Okay, I give up, what is your point?

by the way, help us out, use paragraphs to make the reading easier. No one's going to read a big blob of text.

You are a weird agnostic. Most don’t lean towards any extreme. The radical rightwing religious groups hate gays, want to legislate morality and punish women and doctors who are pro choice. Is that the world that you say is nice and peaceful? They are not much different than Islam. The religious right want to force prayer on schools, force their religion on you and suppress the rights of woman.

Wow!. That's a different take on religion. One of the problems with religious right loosing some influence is because of left wing liberal in control of our government and courts keep using the system to screw up society. Let anything go if it's anti religion seems to be their goal.
