Iran claims to have seized British oil tanker in strait of Hormuz

Man...this is going to end poorly.

In all seriousness, the Iranian Revolutionary regime is one that has engaged in lawlessness, mendacity and terror. The Western Governments were engaged in self-delusion thinking that their playing a shell game of putting some anodyne Santa Claus-like figure as Rouhani signaled some major institutional shift in policy. It was simply playing Good Cop Bad Cop.

ETA: It's been confirmed that they took two oil tankers.

Could be the same one?? Only have confirmation on 1 seized.

Brits / EU will need to deploy more naval assets to escort tankers.

So when the UK seizes and Iranian ship it is ok when Iran seizes an UK ship it is lawlessness?

Indeed. It's supposed to be retaliation for the ship the UK seized, but this kind of thing usually ends up in violence of some kind. You can only play slapsies for so long before someone gets punched.

Well they've grabbed a few at this point, yes? I'm not sure the UK and the US are in a place where poking is going to go well.

I always felt that our Forever War was going to end up in Iran, but they seem really intent on making that happen.

The UAE one yesterday was seized based on the suspicion of smuggling refined oil products out of Iran (which are subsidized) and likely for sale somewhere else at higher prices. It is a small ship that was believed to be carrying a couple million liters vs 2 million barrels when it comes to supertankers
 
Iraq was a mistake since day one and turned into a huge, expensive quagmire that eventually gave rise to ISIS. I think anything that involves Iran is going to be even more sticky.
