Only 35 per cent of US adults intend to watch a ‘great deal’ or ‘fair amount’ of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, according to polling data from Gallup.

Confirmed:

  • 2024 interest is significantly down on the 48 per cent of US adults who intended to watch the 2016 Olympics
  • 34 per cent of US adults said they will not watch much of this year’s event, while 30 per cent do not plan to watch any of the Games
  • 39 per cent of women plan to watch a great deal or fair amount of Paris 2024, which is more than the 32 per cent of men, who intend to do the same
  • Women’s gymnastics picked by 42 per cent of US Olympics fans as the sport they are most looking forward to watching at the Summer Games
  • The next most popular sport is men’s track and field, which was the first choice of ten per cent of US Olympics fans, while seven per cent of fans nominated women’s track and field
Color me unsurprised. Too many pastimes and skills presented as Olympic sports when in fact they are no kind of sport at all. Too many venues. Too many channels and types of media offering coverage. Poor production quality with many technical glitches. I suspect some of these cockamamy so called events hold no interest for anybody but family members of contestants.

If anybody has done a worse management job than MLB, its the IOC as they are approaching FIFA level lunacy.

Interesting to me that the major rationalization for the D's holding their convention starting Aug 19th was the Olympics. D's might want to reconsider that one.

It's the everybody included mentality, goes with the everybody gets a trophy crew. True competition in athletics is awesome but some things just are not sport. But it's the problems like the Paris opening ceremony with drag queens that aggravate me more than skateboarding. Democracy seems to have misunderstood rule by the people. Inclusion in every weird, outlandish fetish may be your right but forcing it out front and center is not Kosher as they used to say. The democracies say rule by the majority, but then want to rule for the minorities. NO, I'm not talking about not being considerate of all, but I'm talking about being considerate of the majority as well.
Were the French organizers really so stupid that they didn't think drag queen Last Supper wasn't going to offend the millions of Christians? Obviously they didn't care.

And, yet, here you are starting a thread about the Olympics.

On Debate Politics.

In the General Political Discussion topic.

Olympic bad news pushes other news off.

Such as, the "The Last Supper" controversy from the Opening Ceremony, such as Dutch Olympian Steven van de Velde who is a convicted rapist (who had served his sentence), such as potential injury to Simone Biles, etc.

Olympic good news pushes other news off.

Seems DEMs figured this out just fine....which gives MAGA the sadz.

I don't watch it as much anymore, either. Part of it is just not being as interested in sports as I used to be, but the NBC coverage has sucked for years. Too much homerism and just flatly stupid commentary and reporting. I also kinda got turned off by Russia and China using their Olympiads to sanitize their nonsense.

Or maybe the French people have a different view of things than American Conservatives.

Sacre Bleu!!!

Because the primary reason for why the D convention is starting on Aug 19th as presented BY DP FORUM MEMBERS ........IS.........wait for it.......THE OLYMPICS.

That famous fudge place: Uranus................................................................Missouri???

For everyone's convenience, I have highlighted the only thing he was trying to say. The rest is just fluff designed to try to bootstrap the hate into respectability.

AHHHH.......DP FORUM MEMBERS.

Read much do you.

For the record, I could not believe it myself. Push the D convention back for the OLYMPICS????? But there ya' go.

The IOC has managed itself down to near insignificance for many Americans and I suspect many PERIOD.

Why is this in "General Political Discussion"?

GPD is not a catch-all forum for everything, stop being lazy.

DEM 2024 Convention dates: 8/19 - 8/22.

DEM 2020 Convention dates: 8/17 - 8/20.

DEM 2016 Convention dates: 7/25 - 7/28

DEM 2012 Convention dates: 9/4 - 9/12.

DEM 2008 Convention dates: 8/25 - 8/28

DEM 2004 Convention dates: 7/26 - 7/29

DEM 2000 Convention dates: 8/14 - 8/17.

Seems pretty normal for the DEMS to have their convention in mid-August or later.

I explained that above. Not going to explain it again.

I might watch part of it or maybe not. The only sportsball I'm interested in would be if one of the kiddos is playing or wants to have a catch. Some kids like sportsball, so I'll cheer them on if they do. Also, every time I'm too busy to have a catch, I start thinking about Cats In The Cradle and Field of Dreams, and then I feel all guilty. Then I generally set my work shit down and have a catch.

The TV presentation of the Paris '24 Summer Olympics is so stuffed with commercials, commentary, promos and other meaningless blather, both verbal and visual, as to make watching for the actual snippets of the athletes performing almost painful. This couch potato is ready to give up on all but the US women's gymnastic finals, if it can be separated from the trash.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

Actually from 1896 through to 1960, the D convention was more often held from May through July. The convention has been held more often later from about 1960 on.

Why so late this year? As offered by DP members.....the Olympics

In an age when the entire knowledge of mankind is at your fingertips because of the ubiquity of wifi and the internet, some choose to react with outrage instead of learning when presented with an idea or image they don't understand. The time spent screeching about drag queens, faux religious intolerance and non-the-last-supper would have allowed to you views more than a handful of videos about Greek mythology.

BTW, It was not a drag queen at the last supper. It was the Greek god Dionysus. Google it.

So, since I've been alive - over 63 years - i.e., the last 15 presidential elections (1964, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92, 96, 00, 04, 08, 12, 16, 20) - it's been held "later."

As demonstrated above in post #12 - it's not.

Again, link?

Use the search engine here. You will find the thread. Heck it can't be more than a week or two old.

Color me astounded. After two COVID tainted Olympics, one might surmise greater interest, not less. Needless to say, compared to the last two, these games will be very well attended, even those held in an expensive city like Paris.
Too many pastimes and skills presented as Olympic sports when in fact they are no kind of sport at all.
I agree. Some are not sports, or should not be considered sports in the purest sense. But some forms of that go back generations already.
Too many venues. Too many channels and types of media offering coverage.
Is there another way to present so many events without the number of venues and channels?? I don't see how. If you ran them all on just a couple of channels, you'd never finish the Summer Olympics in a month, even if they were televised 24/7. So far, PEACOCK has done a great job of offering every event either live, or on replay.
Poor production quality with many technical glitches. I suspect some of these cockamamy so called events hold no interest for anybody but family members of contestants.
I think the production quality has been exceptional for everything I've watched so far. In fact, the 3 hour long opening ceremony was the best I've ever seen or heard, right down to the sound engineering. Nothing short of extraordinary. I can't imagine all the work that went into it.
If anybody has done a worse management job than MLB, its the IOC as they are approaching FIFA level lunacy.
Perhaps you can offer examples of how the games have been mismanaged so far. I have yet to see it. If it is true, it is behind the scenes where it belongs. The presentation is first rate.

Seems to be working out so far.

I've always liked the field events Shotput, Discus, Hammer, Javelin throws, , which get little coverage. They start August 1st.

We record everything at watch it at our leisure. I am sure we are not the only people doing that.
