On Monday, July 21st, Instagram temporarily suspended the account of Zohran Mamdani, a New York State Assembly member and NYC mayoral candidate. The suspension, which lasted approximately 3 hours before his account was reinstated, was explained by Instagram senior directors in an internal leaked memo that his content was deemed “too socialist,” and goes against current national US interest.

I'm sure right wingers will fall over themselves to defend this attack on Mamdani's freedom of speech. Going after a political candidate's account on your platform purely because you don't like their politics.

I, for one, welcome Zuckerberg having his minions do stuff like this. It's important that the world sees what these people really are.

If Insta was going to suspend his account, they should have at least come up with a better excuse than THAT.

Link to whatever you are quoting? This is not being reported on that I can see.

My position is that these social media companies can suspend anyone they want for what ever reason because it is their playground… their rules.

People have a right to speech but they don’t have the right to someone else’s private platform.

But what does make this funny is the near decade of right wing butthurt over this issue and we all know that next to zero people who have been crowing about this for years will rise up and defend Mamdani.

I agree on the one hand, but then, on the other, why the Hell are we allowing billionaires buy up and monopolize all avenues of public discourse in the United States?

Will the only places left to openly air our political opinions without offended billionaire censorship be our homes and the public sidewalks? Or perhaps not even those, since Blackrock will force people to sign covenants barring socialist speech in their rental homes and apartments?

Huh i didnt think merely going against US interests would classify as a suspension.

Even Obama didn't get this kind of attack treatment, even the Democrats are attacking him and yet the voters seem to be saying to the power base, we like him and we don't care what you think.

There was a french doctor and, whoa nelly, did he have a remedy.

I mean Dim Tool already gave up the game a while ago. They were never genuinely for free speech.

Were you this upset when Twitter and Facebook suspended Trump's accounts?

No I'll see what was said about people getting kicked off of Twitter for the wrong opinion. It's private company.

forgot the link! thanks
Thanks, but FYI this may be fake news.

Happened two days ago, but only for 3 hours, and already there was some memo leak, plus no statement from Mamdani or article from a mainstream outlet?

Did you call it an assault on free speech? Will you do the same for Mamdani?

You're trying to imply I'm being a hypocrite while being a hypocrite yourself. And by the way, I'm not upset. I welcome Meta doing this, because I want the world to see what this platform and its owners are truly like.

I reviewed his Instagram content going back to July 1st. I don't see anything socialist or 'too socialist' in any of his posts.

This stinks.

That is one of the problems with letting Billionaires exist.

It’s like a lot of our problems are created by Billionaires

I cannot think of a single problem in the United States that does not ultimately have the fingerprints of at least one billionaire if not several billionaires all over it, from our broken healthcare system, to our cost of living and housing crisis, to environmental degradation, to the prison industrial complex...Hell, even to child-trafficking rings.

Billionaires should not be allowed to exist in a democracy with rule of law, and they as a class should go the way of the French Monarchy.
