India Tests Nuclear-Capable Missile.....

Now all they need is the Nuclear material.....and they are good to go. Naturally Pakistan isn't to happy about this. Nor China. What say ye?

India on Saturday successfully used a mobile launcher to test-fire a nuclear-capable ballistic missile that could strike targets in Pakistan and China. The Agni-V is India’s first intercontinental ballistic missile. It has a range of around 5,000 kilometers. The ability to fire it using a mobile launcher increases the number of potential targets India would be able to reach.

India is slowly becoming one of the world’s biggest military powers. Its defense budget—more than $30 billion last year—is on course to become the fourth-largest in the world behind the U.S., China and Russia in the next five years, according to IHS Jane’s, a defense publisher. It is already the biggest arms importer in the world. Soon after taking office, Mr. Modi’s government eased restrictions on foreign direct investment in defense companies to encourage more international companies to manufacture in India.....snip~

India Tests Nuclear-Capable Missile - WSJ

Hard to know what's the news here. India has had nuclear weapons for awhile now. New missiles, I guess, maybe the mobile launch capability.

Perhaps we should look at this another way. Why should India *not* have the same capability of their neighbors?

What capability? India has had nukes for awhile now. Maybe this delivery system keeps them up with Pakistan...

It was an assumption on my part, that India is acquiring a weapon that upsets their neighbors possibly because it is something their neighbors themselves either already have and/or cannot defend well against. I could be wrong, but I would be shocked if China and Pakistan do not have similar weapons.

My mistake. India has had nuclear warheads since the seventies but hasn't had a good delivery system till now.

Well, then you are default arguing for fewer nations to have almost modern day empire status in ability to hold back "competition." If you objectively review history of that mentality, what does it tell you on the likelihood of that being long term successful?

Way too many variables involved to make such a prediction.

The "caste" system has not been observed since before the second world war. It left when they through out the Haj.

India is one of the most democratic nations in the Commonwealth, with stable government and regular elections for many years and in the last few decades far better ruled than the US

Not entirely:

The Republic of India became independent on August 15, 1947. India's new government instituted laws to protect the "Scheduled castes and tribes" - including both the untouchables and groups who live traditional life-styles. These laws include quota systems to ensure access to education and to government posts.

Over the past sixty years, therefore, in some ways a person's caste has become more of a political category than a social or religious one.

The government of Pakistan is treacherous. I've always thought the best way for India to keep its untrustworthy neighbor on its best behavior was through naval power. Pakistan's geography makes it very vulnerable to a blockade--it would have a very hard time getting goods in and out by land. With a fleet of modern subs, India would present Pakistan with a constant threat of a blockade it would be helpless to lift.

You mean other than the conclusion that not a one of them still exists?

Not "a one of" what still does not exists? The other superpowers? They do, look now its India, theres China, us in EU and USA, Canada, Russia etc.

Which other article?

I ask cause I do not consider Wiki a valid and reliable source. I do not give Wiki the honor of my visit at their site for these more serious issues.

I meant the articles in the 1990s journals like Foreign Affairs.

No, "empires."

I have not read those,

Do you have non Wiki links to present please?

I guess I could look for articles in journals. I have done so before. But what prevents you from doing so? Just Google articles about global or international security using structure, mad, proliferation etc as search words. Or go to Foreign Affairs or Foreign Policy Magazine and use their search engine.

I did not post that there are no "empires" today, but it brings another issue: Who declares their countries to be a part of empire officially today?

You are missing the point, but that hardly matters. At the end of the day there is little reason to assume India will bow to international pressure to not pursue a better delivery system for these type of weapons.

Agreed,

My post was speculative of a world where there are too many superpowers, and what could happen if they all want the very same thing.

About all I can offer you then is any increase in the number of superpowers inherently dilutes the strength of each one as there would be less smaller nations to intimidate and/or dominate.

Colonization of another planet. The Moon would be a good starting point and with us telling the UN. Screw their treaty.

**** the UN, they have, are, and always will be nothing but an organization of dick suckers.

Well when it comes to the treaty over the Moon.....there is no reason for us to listen to them. Most can't even put a man on the moon. Let alone try and build anything up there.
