Indonesia, the world’s third-largest democracy, cleared a sweeping overhaul of its criminal code on Tuesday, outlawing sex outside of marriage, defamation of the president and sharply expanding its laws against blasphemy.

The new rules, which also apply to foreigners in the country, have drawn criticism from human rights activists, businesspeople and students who warned of the risks posed to the L.G.B.T. community and religious minorities. Opponents also said that the rules threatened the global reputation that Indonesia, which has the world’s largest Muslim population, has built as a tolerant, widely secular nation.

Indonesia's Parliament on Tuesday voted to revise the country's penal code to criminalize all sex outside of marriage and to prohibit insulting the president, vice president and state institutions or ideology.




Indonesia, which is the world's largest Muslim-majority country, also expanded existing blasphemy laws and maintained a five-year prison sentence for people who deviate from the nation's recognized religions of Islam, Protestantism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism, the Associated Press reported.


Parliament maintained the part of the code criminalizing abortions but added exceptions to save a mother's life and for rape if the fetus is at less than 12 weeks of gestation.


Additionally, the revised code states that citizens can face up to 10 years in prison for being associated with Marxist-Leninist organizations and up to four years behind bars for spreading communism.

Possibly some extreme ones. I haven't heard anyone in the US suggesting sex outside of marriage should be illegal. But, as a COVID prevention measure, it would be ideal.

How exactly do you plan to enfioce that couples or family members in the same house must stay 6' apart? I'm not sure that social distancing was ever legally enforceable.

Of course these laws will be selectively enforced with foreigners just getting off getting off by paying a large fine. My thinking is Indonesia doesn't want to end up as just another Asian sex tourist hot spot like Thailand, Vietnam or the Philippines. They have higher aspirations.
