In defeat for Beijing, Hague court to hear China Sea dispute

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) -
An arbitration court in the Netherlands ruled on Thursday that it has jurisdiction to hear some territorial claims the Philippines has filed against China over disputed areas in the South China Sea.

In a legal defeat for China, the Hague-based tribunal rejected Beijing's claim that the disputes were about its territorial sovereignty and said additional hearings would be held to decide the merits of the Philippines' arguments.
Thoughts are?

The short answer is that till now the USA has been the informal sheriff and the costs would be much higher after signing. If the UN were to believable guarantee security robustly in a general fashion, the USA could sign.
....with what?

Because it will push India and others closer to the US??
Hm. Ironically, less India than Vietnam.

But that is only part of it. China's actions need to be delegitimized to help the slow process of unifying ASEAN against their expansion.

Vietnam due to the old Soviet naval base?
India is key, they moved the majority of their naval assets to be based on the China side. India and China if I recall fought 3 wars. Territorial disputes are hot button issues in India.
They are upgrading their Military assets. A fast growing economy, that with the right changes will overtake China's due to age differences.
The old saying about China is, they will be grey before they are rich.
The last thing needed is a war, yet both countries are preparing for it.

Vietnam due to geopolitics and their history with China.

India has its Look East policy, but Vietnam is the one with need. [emoji6] watch for it.
