Impeachment article to be delivered Monday, Trump will be tried, Schumer says - MarketWatch

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Friday he expects the formal impeachment charge of former president Donald Trump to be delivered Monday, setting the stage for Trump’s trial over alleged incitement to insurrection.

While Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell had proposed a trial not start until February, Schumer’s announcement would indicate a faster beginning and came as he and McConnell have wrangled over how to organize the 50-50 split Senate.

McConnell, apparently forgetting he was no longer Senate majority leader, announced that the trial would be put off til after Senate confirmations.

Good, it needs to be done, so let's get it over with. Hopefully the result will be bipartisan and then hopefully the country can move on one way or the other.

He's been an career obstructionist for so long he simply can't help himself. That and his remaining fear of rad Trumpers still lingering in the halls of Congress and the big business machines which feeds him the big bucks.

"We are respectful of the Senate’s constitutional power over the trial and always attentive to the fairness of the process, noting that the former president will have had the same amount of time to prepare for trial as our (House Impeachment) Managers," she said.

"Our Managers are ready to begin to make their case to 100 Senate jurors," the California Democrat continued. "Exactly one week after the attack on the Capitol to undermine the integrity of our democracy, a bipartisan vote of the House of Representatives passed the article of impeachment, which is our solemn duty to deliver to the Senate."

It's important for the Senate to not rush this. To that end, they should take about as much time for this decision as they did to evaluate Barrett's suitability to lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. That seems fair.

What was that, a week or so?

It will definitely be bipartisan. Some Republican Senators have already come out to say they will vote to convict him. Mitt Romney declined to say if he will, but that probably is because of the huge backlash he got from Utah citizens for voting to convict him in 2020. I can't see any reason he would vote to acquit the rattlesnake this time. Mitch McConnell said he is "on the fence" two weeks ago, according to CNN, Should we believe him?

Being a SC attorney, we can bet that Bowers will have Sen Graham in his ear coaxing his moves to free his favorite pos on Earth.

Trial ahead, Trump turns to ethics lawyer for his defense | The Seattle Times

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Butch Bowers is used to defending public officials in ethics cases. But he’s never faced anything quite like this.

It’s up to Bowers, a South Carolina elections and ethics lawyer, to rise and defend Donald Trump as the Senate plunges next week into an impeachment trial unlike any other, centered on accusations that the former president incited the mob that rampaged through the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. For Trump, the first president twice impeached, the stakes are enormous: If convicted, he could be barred from holding public office again, ending any hopes of mounting another White House bid in 2024.

This has a feel that Biden has the final say as to when the trial should be held, but regardless who has that power it appears now that this will be held off until possibly mid Feb. I would had rather gotten it over with quickly, while walking and chewing gum at the same time, but not surprised with this possible decision.

Biden signals he's willing to delay Trump trial

Under the rules for an impeachment trial, the article moving to the Senate triggers the start of the trial at 1 p.m. the following day, except for Sundays. But Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he is having discussions with McConnell about the timing and length of the trial.

McConnell proposed on a call with GOP senators Thursday that the trial be delayed until February to give the former president enough time to mount a defense.

"It would have been the 10th or 11th [of February] or somewhere in there," said Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.), who said McConnell wants to give Trump the same amount of time he had to prepare for the first impeachment trial and that former President Clinton had to prepare for his 1999 impeachment trial.

Biden and his top aides have publicly been noncommittal about the dynamics of the impeachment trial, repeatedly deferring to Senate leaders to hash out how to handle Trump's fate. But they have been insistent that the upper chamber should be able to simultaneously conduct Trump's trial while also working to confirm Biden's nominees and negotiate on an economic relief bill proposed by the current administration.

Yes but we prefer everyone be clean-shaven and wear beanies, and the proceedings be filmed in black and white. It just adds to that Marxist look, you know? Imagine how much more dramatic Bill Clinton's Show Trial would have been if filmed with Marxist sensibilities! Instead all we got was Kenneth Star looking like, well, Kenneth Star in real life. Blech.

I pray I’ll visit Donald Trump at a rally this Spring and discuss the merit of reincarnate Constitutional Government. I am looking forward to such an encounter.

i don't see a conviction happening. i think that we're going to be looking at a situation in which he not only gets away with fomenting an insurrection, but his supporters also stick by him and won't even admit that he fomented the insurrection or that it was even an insurrection at all.

Whether enough GOPers grow a pair and convict this narcistic fraud or not, your boy will be in the slammer sooner than later. How does it feel to be a supporter of a criminal? You still have the fuzzies for this assclown?

I think there is enough GOPers that will grow a pair and convict him. They realize that Trump has done irreparable damage to their party and the trash must be disposed of properly.

Democrats are so in fear of their own weak party and their own weak future, that all the fuel they have to run on is this silly diversion and smoke screen.

Trump is out, why don't they just move on?

But I'm fine with this. In two years Republicans take back the house, and in 4 years the senate and the Presidency too. Enough time for Americans to be able to compare what the 3 years (pre covid) were for like for them under Trump, after the 4 years of coming clownery by Shummer, Pelosi, the squad, Sanders, and whoever will be operating sleepy Joe's strings for him.

it wouldn't be the first time that i've missed a prediction.

The US constitution gives the congress the power. to remove a president through the impeachment process. It doesn’t give them the power to remove a president who is no longer in office.

Those Marxists in 1789 wrote impeachment into the constitution for a reason.
If trying to instigate a coup and insurrection of the government isn’t impeachable I don’t know what is.

we just dont treat treason like we used to. You know Trump has been wanting us to go back to the brutal old days ;). This is the only instance I would fully support doing what practically every other country would have done.
