CBS) At Least 100,000 Illegal Immigrants Flee the State Fearing Legislation; Some Citizens Angered by Financial Impact
On a dusty block in Phoenix, 15 years of the Quintana family's possessions are for sale.
Manuela Quintana said that they decided to leave when the Arizona governor signed the new immigration law.
For years, their family thrived with jobs in restaurants and construction, reports CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella. Their 10 children were born here and are U.S. citizens. Both she and her husband are undocumented, and currently unemployed.
She said that her biggest fear is being put in jail and having her children taken away from her. Just the thought of moving scares their 12-year-old daughter Graciela.
"I think it's going to be my worst day," Graciela said.
Two years ago, this park was filled with families every weekend. Arizona was home to more than half a million illegal immigrants. Since then, at least 100,000 have left.
Under President Eisenhower, with Special Inquiry Officers for hearings, the federal government, in 1954, was able actually to deport, voluntarily return or scare off possibly over 1.3 million illegal aliens from Mexico over about a year during Operation Wetback. In Texas, the federal government deported illegal aliens on trucks, busses and even by ship from South Texas to the port of Vera Cruz, Mexico, 500 miles south and points beyond. Of the 1.3m, approx. 700,000 made a voluntary exodus southward.
I don't think they are all going back to Mexico, probably just moving to a different state.Ummmm, good? This is good news to me, frankly. Illegal immigrants should return to their country of origin, since they are breaking our laws by being here.
buh-bye, now. :2wave:

Who will probably imitate this law post haste once the effects are seen more clearly. And, a lot of them aren't from Mexico. They're from Guatemala or Honduras or El Salvador or Canada.
I like the way CBS news calls them 'immigrants', not 'illegal immigrants'. Then they proceed to share the story of a family with 10, yes 10, children (all American citizens, naturally). They tug at our heart strings. Who could not sympathize with this honorable family?
They are currently unemployed.Sooooo, how are they supporting these 10 children that they so happily had? How much U.S. taxpayer money has gone to assist them in raising them? How many American middle class citizens deferred childbearing in order to pay the taxes to support this illegal immigrant family, that lives hand to mouth, never worrying about having another child?

That's what I've been saying.Outstanding, now we need to enact a federal law similar to the Arizona law and they will leave the country, problem solved.

At Least 100,000 Illegal Immigrants Flee the State Fearing Legislation
Funny, I have a family member who owns and runs a landscaping company in Tempe. Neither he nor anyone on his payroll is an illegal immigrant. I know several restaurant owners in the area too, they don't have anyone washing dishes for them that is not a legal citizen. Can't speak for the house cleaning but strongly suspect there are plenty of people in this economy to fill that role. We won't go into the fruit picking jobs lost in Arizona for fairly obvious reasons, mostly Obama's "work card" program.Good, now all the out of work Arizonians can get jobs mowing lawns, cleaning houses, picking fruit and washing dishes.
Or we'll watch AZ scramble to try to find someone to do these minimum wage jobs and the economy will suffer.
We'll see.....

If those businesses can not find citizens to do those jobs for minimum wage then logic would dictate that minimum wage is not enough to do those jobs. And even if they can not find any citizens to work those jobs no matter how high they raise the pay or what benefits they include, there is a legal means for an employer to employ foreign workers(of course they means paying that migrant worker what the national wage is for that job. So this boo hoo we won't be able to find any workers to replace illegals is a load of crap.
Niggling lil problem with that bromide is that most "fast food" is a corporate endeavor and most certainly not hiring illegal immigrants. Thanks be to God that the sacrifice of green pools and yellow lawns (most lawns I have seen in AZ are pebble or of the colorful rock variety or completely free of grass) is a truly tolerable one compared to the billions of dollars in cost and effect that illegal immigration has upon the US and this state. Somehow I suspect all three situations (oh the horror!:rollI see a lot of yellow lawns and green pools in Arizona's future. Fast food is sure to slow down too.
If legal immigrants are bothered, that's their problem. Maybe they have something hide.Look if they are illegals then they deserve to and need to go home. So if this flawed law has managed to get rid of illegals that is a good thing. As long as legall permanent residents and naturalized immigrants are not bothered then fine.
if it illegals going by bye then I say good go and go quickkly and go in large numbers. It's that simple !!!
Simple really.
It would all be over in a few days- after they raided ie, the biggest 50 restaurants in LA, etc.
I live in NYC and the cleaner across the street is ALL Mexican illegals.
The Diner next to them.. the same.
And so it goes.
Nice to see what a real minimum wage would look like too. Probably more like $10 without the phony huge illegal pool, and before our college kids take what will then become decent jobs.

It's always been a load of crap.
I'm pretty liberal on immigration but when it comes to guest worker programs and things of that nature I get steamed.
This has been going on for so long that the prevailing wage for some of these industries has been dropped to minimum wage.
Industries will exploit the guest worker programs to hell.
I checked my states Department of Labor job board to find some part time work and the veggie/fruit picker pay has gone down.
It used to be in the mid to upper $8, now it's at minimum wage.
That is some real ass busting work.
And don't forget the painters and construction workers, restaurant delivery bicyclists, chicken-factory employees, strawberry pickers, etc.
These jobs will either have to start paying livable wages - or the jobs will vanish.
While we're at it, lets put a 1,000-percent tax on Walmart to force it to end its practice of purchasing Chinese-made product.
Of course they don't want them - who TF is going to do back-breaking labor for $5/hour, when the cushy banker jobs in suits and in air-conditioned offices pay 10 times more?
The reality is that the 2 should be reversed, where the hard-to-fill, more strenuous jobs pay more than the cushy office jobs, that's the way a market economy is supposed to work.
