Immediate Expansion of American Timber Production

Immediate Expansion of American Timber Production
https://www.whitehouse.gov/presiden...iate-expansion-of-american-timber-production/
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:

Section 1. Purpose. The production of timber, lumber, paper, bioenergy, and other wood products (timber production) is critical to our Nation's well-being. Timber production is essential for crucial human activities like construction and energy production. Furthermore, as recent disasters demonstrate, forest management and wildfire risk reduction projects can save American lives and communities.

The United States has an abundance of timber resources that are more than adequate to meet our domestic timber production needs, but heavy-handed Federal policies have prevented full utilization of these resources and made us reliant on foreign producers. Our inability to fully exploit our domestic timber supply has impeded the creation of jobs and prosperity, contributed to wildfire disasters, degraded fish and wildlife habitats, increased the cost of construction and energy, and threatened our economic security. These onerous Federal policies have forced our Nation to rely upon imported lumber, thus exporting jobs and prosperity and compromising our self-reliance. It is vital that we reverse these policies and increase domestic timber production to protect our national and economic security.

Sec. 2. Directives to the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Agriculture.

(a) Within 30 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Agriculture, through the Director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Chief of the United States Forest Service (USFS), respectively, shall each issue new or updated guidance regarding tools to facilitate increased timber production and sound forest management, reduce time to deliver timber, and decrease timber supply uncertainty, such as the Good Neighbor Authority described in 16 U.S.C. 2113a, stewardship contracting pursuant to 16 U.S.C. 6591c, and agreements or contracts with Indian tribes under the Tribal Forest Protection Act as contemplated by 25 U.S.C. 3115a
_________________________________________________________
Does everyone understand what this executive order means? It means that the US plans to deforest our National Parks to make up for the shortfall of lumber coming from Canada due to Trump's tariffs. It means that Trump just ordered swaths of our national forests to be cut down, 280 million acres, to be exact. All for cheaper lumber. This EO means bypassing environmental protections, including the 'Endangered Species Act'. The entire ecosystem, wolves, bears, and endangered species could be wiped out just to make timber companies richer. This isn't about helping everyday Americans, this is about helping corporate logging companies.

In the process, we lose clean water, clean air and wildlife habitats. This destruction of our forests harms the environment. Trees are a necessary component for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and cutting trees down to this extent will speed up global warming. Destroying our national forests for a quick cash-grab is reckless and shortsighted. Trump is willing to sacrifice millions of acres of protected land for cheaper lumber.
I don't think this is about making timber companies richer. I doubt that many of them make it to Trump's radar screen.

Trump wants to fight with Canada and lumber has been a longstanding issue. Trump wants to show he is tough on Canada by saying 25% tariffs (saying, not doing) but he doesn't want the backlash from higher housing cost. This is a ham-handed way to try and relieve that cost increase. I don't think it will work. Industries, even simple ones like sawmills, can't just spring up over night. Trump doesn't seem to understand that.

He'll have one of his lumber corporate giants to move their equipment into one of our national parks in a day or two.

I expect that this EO, like many of the others, will get tied up in court.

Trump might make a big show of it, however. Have film crews filming giant redwoods being cut down, to get the MAGAs all excited. Like flying handfuls of deportees to Gitmo in airplanes made to carry tanks because the planes impress the rednecks. Co-presidents Trump and Musk love theater.

It seems we don't have enough of the right kinds of lumber in our national forests to make up for loss of Canadian imports.

where did it say "deforest our national parks" ???

where did it say 280 million acres ??

a quick google shows

The United States has 193 million acres of national forest and grasslands, which is roughly the size of Texas. The US Forest Service (USFS) manages these public lands.

If you didn't notice, it was in my own comment where I stated there are 280 million acres in our combined national forests. However, if you want validation of the "280 million acres" you can get it at this link (and others); https://earthjustice.org/press/2025/earthjustice-responds-to-executive-order-targeting-forests.

As for his play to cut national forest lumber, here is the link to that: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/02/climate/trump-logging-national-forests.html

No, that is not what I said, what I said is that there are 280,000,000 acres available to Trump to lumber if he so chooses.

I literally am quoting you here ... you ready ?

ok, he didn't order that at all, did he ? some to be cut yes, but not 280 million acres

could be wiped out? what the heck does this even mean? forests in the years after clearcuts are amazing for wildlife, did you know? the browse is fantastic, the flowers/berries, the shelter etc .... you know what the #1 LEAST providing forest is for wildlife in general? Old Growth.

""In the process, we lose clean water, clean air and wildlife habitats. This destruction of our forests harms the environment. ""

selective cutting and smart harvesting/forestry doesn't destroy

Get over yourself already, you're spitting in the wind trying to defend Trump. It's not working. The facts are all against you.

you tried to say things that wasn't true and I called you on it and provided information to show it AND asked for links to prove your claims which you didn't do

cutting forests is GOOD for wildlife
forests are renewable
nowhere was national parks mentioned
nowhere was 280 million acres mentioned

There's something wrong with the way your brain thinks in a critical manner. Do you understand, and I'll take a wild chance that you do, that cutting thousands of acres of OUR NATIONAL PARKS, is bad on several levels? Unlike Canada, the United States is a newcomer to reducing forests to nothing but cleared earth. Trump's EO is counter to decades of environmental policy in the Pacific Northwest. Federal forests have been largely off-limits to logging of old-growth trees since the Northwest Forest Plan, which was the most ambitious multispecies protection plan in the world when it was adopted in 1994. Trump can sign all the executive orders he wants to sign every day, it doesn't change the fact that he cannot arbitrarily change the requirements of congressionally enacted laws.

Any effort on Trump's part to cut protected areas, particularly by working around the Endangered Species Act, would be challenged in court. Our nation’s forests are protected under multiple federal laws, to be managed for species protection, recreation, clean water and air, and not just timber production!

link to "cutting thousands of acres of OUT NATIONAL PARKS" please - because I've not read that anywhere and I think you're making it up

one of the worst places for wildlife in general are old growth forests - they're pretty. They also have thick matt's of needles/leaves, low light comes through, there isn't grass, browse, flowers etc. I kinda know this since I've been in the woods all my life all over the USA

a large wilderness are I used to hunt burned in 2010/2012 ..... exceptionally hot like the Yellowstone fires. 4 years later? thick undergrowth, mule deer and elk LOVE it - small game, upland birds LOVE it

we cut national forest all the time - did you not know ?

Ordinarily, the US Forestry Service does any of the logging in our national parks. But, I would bet that there's an outside logging company that greased Trump's palm by donating to his election that will get the contract.
Why would your timber production expand? China has just banned imports of American lumber.

It seems we don't have enough of the right kinds of lumber in our national forests to make up for loss of Canadian imports.

Canadian imports aren't lost, just 25% more expensive.
You watch, domestic production will go up in price 20%.

It works that way in my industry (steel). Already has this year. And with new ones it will go up again. I look forward to my bonus next year!

I wholeheartedly agree that deforestation contributes to global warming, no matter which country is doing the logging. This concern was raised in the '90s after studies of the depletion of the Amazon rain forests and the effects of global warming were revealed. Canada’s 348 million hectares of forest lands represent about 9% of the world’s forest cover, but account for only 0.3% of global deforestation.

Canada is a world leader in sustainable forest management. Deforestation only occurs when forests are permanently removed, so the land can be used for something else. All areas harvested on public land must be reforested, either by replanting or through natural regeneration. Canada has some of the most rigorous laws in the world for protecting forests and ensuring sustainable forest management, and have been able to consistently reduce deforestation over the past 20 years. Their deforestation rate is among the lowest in the world.

Additionally, a significant majority (94%) of the province's commercially managed forests have received certification from either the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), which are considered the leading environmental certification bodies in Canada for forestry practices. Canada is a world leader in sustainable forest management.

Is the United States committed to focusing on reforesting of acres where lumber will be cut in our national parks? As it is in Canada, lumbering is primarily a private industry, but the majority of the forest land where timber is harvested is publicly owned, like our national parks. Will there be any oversight of the private lumber companies who will be given this sweet contract to deforest our national parks? Will that oversight be non-political? That's the big question.

I didn't copy anything. I listen to the analysis of multiple contributors on any one of a number of various networks, I read dozens of articles stating facts. Why don't you stop trolling me just because I gave you statistics.

Oh...BTW. I have no problem with the statistics about Canada logging. They don't support your argument though.

Jesus, how many times does someone need to tell you the same thing? It was an EO just signed by Trump, get it now?

I am not denying anything. Unlike you people who seek your 'truth' from far-right podcasters and 'social media influencers' along with Fox Newz of course, I spend my time seeking facts from legitimate news sources, the same news sources that Donald Trump is doing all he can to silence. Try reading BBC or France 24, I bet you never left your cozy comfort zone to read something from Al Jazeera or India Times? Try it for a few days, get your minds out of the social media gutters of far-right anarchists.

You stated, "Ordinarily, the US Forestry Service does any of the logging in our national parks. "
Your statement stated the USFS "does" the logging. It is stated as if it has happened in the past.

The WhiteHouse link does not mention National Parks. It talks about USFS and BLM land.

Did the EO also terminate NEPA?
For someone to log in a National Park as a minimum an Environmental Assessment would have to be done. More likely an Environmental Impact Statement would be required.

What is so stupid about the EO is DOGE has recommended the firing and resulted in firing of people who would mark the timber sale, work with contracting personnel to prepare/offer the sale up for bid, monitor the sale once sold. Without Congress changes the rules one does not just say hey contractor, go harvest this area. Especially since the EO talks about good forest management practices.

Deforestation only occurs when forests are permanently removed so the land can be used for something else.

According to laws, regulations and policies in place across Canada, all areas harvested on public land must be reforested, either by replanting or through natural regeneration.
