Standing alone his quote sounds justifiable ridiculous, however within the context of his speech and as part of his overall point it makes sense. He certainly should have phrased it better to avoid a situation like this and to make his point clearer. Or heck he could have left that entire sentence out and his point would have stood.

Lastly, yes you changed the phrase regardless what you think about his position or the grammar of his wording I'd still consider it misquoting someone. Sure you posted the correct word in your post and its not a big deal anyway, I just thought I'd point it out.

Edit: That frown in the link isn't my doing, must have been something in the hyperlink to do that. It links to a WashingtonTimes article that has the text I quoted.

I don't think looking at the video of the speech or the transcript that this was the focal point of his speech, there's nothing to suggest that this entire speech revolved around the message that people who got businesses didn't build them. I mean are you going to tell me that an excellent speech giver like Obama is going to make the major point of his speech like that? And then ignore where he flat out says "The point is...?" Its obviously part of a build up to a bigger point, which is that we succeed not only because of individual efforts but of collective ones too. You can disagree with his point, but there's no way to reasonably say that of everything he said that short sentence was the framework of the speech.

I don't see the importance, its only rhetoric and is conveying the message that "no man is an island" and calling people to work together. It offers no specifics for actions, or plans for the future, hence why its rhetoric and doesn't really mean anything.

It's not a truism. plenty of people didn't have a great person in their lives to help them out growing up and still created a business. It's not required to have some great person/experience in your past to do something worthwhile. In fact, saying such is incredibly disrespectful for those people who pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps and did so.


Not that obama would know anything about hard work, or creating a successful business for that matter. hence his stupid comment.

Lets not be childish here, remember how your mother once said if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all? Well as an adult we all know that's a rule impossible to live by, sometimes unkind things must be said. However there's a similar rule one should carry throughout life; if you have nothing intelligent to say, don't say anything at all. And if this were soccer I'd give you a red card for flagrant rule violation.


You too, you've ignored the other points about building roads, bridges, the creation of the internet, etc which are results of collective work that allow individual success.

He was quite clear in his comments. If you own a business, someone else actually made that happen for you.

You are not responsible for your own success, someone else is.

Obama absolutely hates the private sector. It's becoming harder and harder for this hack to hide his true ideals. He won't be satisfied until the United States falls victim to the sole of his fascist jackboot. His personal utopia is that the Imperial Government dictate 100% of the economy. Oppress private business. Crush the free market. Vladimir Lenin would be so proud of him.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.

If you were going to base an entire speech off one sentence, why didnt you choose this one? Was it bias? Certainly it was. You've ignored that portion as well as every other single part of what he said. I mean he says right there, which is only 3 sentences after the one you've focused on about businesses, so did you just not read that far or did you just ignore it?

See by focusing on a single sentence I can make the speech sound like it was about anything I want, and that's where the fallacy in this kind of thinking is clearly shown. So maybe you should step back from your position for a second, and add to what you saw on a TWELVE SECOND youtube video to form your final opinion. And of course, let go of your bias for a minute, that is required as well. If you read his entire speech, or at least scan through it, you'll find that the speech covers several topics and is not saying what you want to believe it says.

And what this speech is, is just rhetoric there's nothing really of substance there. It appeals to ideals, hope, and other vague points that don't translate into specific action most of the time, in the speech Obama scarely talks about specific issues.

Actually, it is true.

I started a business that became very successful. I did it with my own money. The concept was mostly original. If it hadn't been for my employees, I would never have made it. So, I didn't do it myself. Unfortunately, the majority of business owners forget that and treat their employees shabbily and without sharing.
