A giant ice shelf has snapped free from an island south of the North Pole, scientists said Thursday, citing climate change as a ''major'' reason for the event. The Ayles Ice Shelf -- all 41 square miles of it -- broke clear 16 months ago from the coast of Ellesmere Island, about 500 miles south of the North Pole in the Canadian Arctic. - source
Huge ice masses snapping off of the arctic in the dead of winter because of "warmer than normal temperatures"?
Any more doubts that we are facing warming?

Who do we blame this one on Clinton or God? I say Clinton. That bastard is responsible for everything.

In reality, this has been going on for 16 years. It started in the Antarctic when Larsen A broke off and desintegrated in 1995, a chunk of ice the size of the State of Deleware broke off the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in 1998 and broke apart, huge cracks in the Amery Ice Shelfand have been forming since the mid-90s which could cause a 900 square kilometer chunk of ice to break off, Larsen B broke off and desintegrated in 2002 and the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, in the Arctic, split in two and began breaking up in 2003. The eco-impact of those aside, such events wreak all kinds of nautical havoc for our sea-bearing vessles because of the unmarked/unknown ice bergs which they create and end up floating around in the world's oceans. This recent development is a VERY bad sign indeed.

Nothing new....get used to it.

20 years from now.....we will be marking GAINS in the Ice sheets...not losses,as that will be news.

Tell you what, lets kill off all the cattle, pork and sheep on the face of the earth because they have and do more harm than mankind has.........then millions of people will starve just so a bunch of environmental doomsayers get their dream of lower greenhouse gases.......

I still have yet to hear one person explain why Mars is seeing melting of the polar icecaps if this is caused by mankind......how you going to tell me Mars has SUV's driven by little green men just trying to kill their planet.....

You're kidding right? Mars has a completely different Mass/environment/ecosphere.....etc....than our Earth. That you actually said this in a serious tone proves beyond any doubt at all....that you have no Idea what you are talking about. Added to this is the current Data which point to seasonal INCREASES in Martian Polar Ice formation.....quit while your behind....its the best you can hope for.

Really....tell it to NASA because they agree with me about Mars.....but5I am sure you will cont to spout off at the mouth no matter how wrong you are or how much of an *** you make of yourself........

Mars is Melting

Right on, Cold! It ain’t our gas guzzling SUV’s and numerous factories exhaling vast plumes of **** 24/7, it’s the sun’s fault!!! Damn bastard sun, it’s out to kill us all! First Mercury, then Venus, AND WE’RE NEXT!1!!!11!! We shouldn’t stop doing things that exacerbate the problem. NO! We need to screw the environment HARDER and FASTER than ever before! It ain’t gonna last, so we might as well get the most out of it!

yep Nasa agrees with you that Spirit and opportunity are destroying mars's ice caps.

Nasa says the dry ice caps are vaporizing because of seasonal change. You think that this huge ice mass up in the arctic in the dead of winter is melting because of seasonal changes?

The Martian Climate Model simply cannot be used in comparison with that of the Earth...they are not similar enough in so many respects that the Apple/Orangeanalogy becomes perfect. That you continue to compare them regardlessof thispoints to a limited understanding of Geology, Cosmology, and planetary science.

"Both the northern and southern Martian ice caps vary in size as its seasons change. Scientists believe that the permanent northern ice cap is mostly frozen water while the southern cap is frozen water and carbon dioxide. Shown here the northern ice cap extends over a sizeable portion of the planet's pole, rippling and folding as ice and snow merge together. Its non-seasonally affected size is several times greater than its southern counterpart.

On Earth much of the planet's fresh water is locked up in ice covering the two poles. This helps preserve a delicate balance in oceanic chemistry as well as relative temperature stasis for the planet. In the opposite corner of the screen we're looking at Antarctica, surrounding Earth's South Pole. And while polar ice, plus the vast ice sheet covering Greenland in the north may only represent roughly three percent of the overall water contained on Earth, it represents two thirds of all the available fresh water -- water that's vital to many of the myriad lifeforms found here. (Click image above for animation)

Data now indicate that Mars' northern polar region may contain as much water as all that's contained on Greenland's ice sheet -- a vast tract of frozen water that's up to three kilometers thick in some places."

Just as on the Earth, seasonal changes will melt both CO2 and H2O....which will then be replenished. But that pretty much ends the similarity of the two bodies. There is no atmosphere to speak of on Mars, and though Unexplained Methane is found within the extremely thin blanket of gasses it does have, the lack of magnetic field and atmosphere make any comparison pointless.

We wont even go into Mass,or geology, though they play an important role in debunking any comparison of Biosphere.
