I want to remind everybody of what the Statue of Liberty says, I forgot.

IMO, that doesn't give credibility in saying it was an obvious advancement. Still, my point remains uncontested.

Anyone familiar with rudimentary electrical generation then or now would understand the principle. The main professional resistance, most noticeably by Edison, concerned safety. Edison developed an amusing appliance to demonstrate the increased safety risks associated with alternating current.

Are you talking about the electric chair? xD

Who said anything about open borders? That comparison is silly because no one individual shoulders the burden of all immigrants. This is where immigration has benefited us. Famous American Immigrants | Immigration Update

So what? And YOU are the one championing letting in the huddled masses, what do you think that means? Immigration law changed to adapt to modern times, just like with every other industrialized nation. Those famous Americans were legal immigrants. It's a bit obscene that you use them as cover for the illegal aliens of today.

Except for scale, it is a precise comparison. Are you saying that you don't want to let strangers into your home and support them? Surely not!

This is an argument against socialism, not immigration.

I think immigrants are in many ways better than entitlement Americans.

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

What about it? Nothing wrong with legal immigration. But there is a problem with illegal immigration. And nothing in that little poem says anything about illegal immigration. Indeed if you look at the times they made sure to make sure people came to this country legally and were against those coming to the country illegally.

Not much of an arguement here. Anybody is better than "entitlement" <insert nationality here> period. But just because they are harder workers etc etc does not give them the right to come into ANY country illegally.

Then again... the statue was given by the French to the Americans (thought it was finished in America) to congratulate them on becoming a truly free nation, ending slavery and all that. The statue was meant to celebrate the american freedom and enlightenment, all guarded under the rule of law and the Constitution. Not mass illegal immigration.

I am all for more open immigration. The reason there is so much illegal immigration is simply because we have those antiquated quota caps on those who most want to come to the US for legitimate reasons.

That was then.

This is now.

Remind me what island is right next door to the statue and what was its purpose?

Problem is you can't have a open border and a generous welfare program you can have one.

Then I will take the more liberal immigration policy 7 days a week though not technically an "open border".

Imagration policy should favor the host country not the imagrant. What is the benifiet to the us by bringing more workers in when we have 90 million unemployed right now?

So you would not be willing to allow more immigration even in exchange for less welfare? How quickly you backed off that false choice.

I believe that bringing in more immigrants will help us economically. Most of those 90M unemployed will never work again because they are, you know, retired and such. The official number is closer to 12M and even the wildest estimates of underemployed/gave up is only in the 20M-25M range. Regardless, I don't care. I oppose extended unemployment for them and I oppose welfare spending without substantial reforms to the system. In a consumer driven economy, having more consumers benefits the economy.

If you look at that 12 million you see that is those who are looking for work those that have given up are not counted

How do you count for those who do not want to work and will not work?

That's not what that means it means they are not actively seeking full time employment there are lots of reasons for that.

That is not exactly what that means. It doesn't really matter. If we had 1.00% unemployment, the conservatives would still oppose open immigration.

Why should any sovereign nation open its borders? If it were to do so, it would quickly lose that sovereignty...

Well the Native American part of my DNA says "No effing kidding". We should open our borders because the people we have bore me I guess.

If we had 1% unemployment and no welfare system a open imagration system would be great but only if you could stop it when unemployment started to rise again.
