Here we go again...

What's wrong with these cops, are they trained to be uncaring about human life?

''I can't breathe,'' Oklahoma man tells police before dying. ''I don't care,'' officer responds.

--In the May 20, 2019 footage, released this week by the Oklahoma City Police Department, three officers are seen restraining the man, Derrick Scott, 42, who can be heard asking repeatedly for his medicine and saying that he can't breathe.

"I don't care," one of the officers, Jarred Tipton, can be heard replying at one point. "You can breathe just fine," another officer can be heard saying a couple of minutes later.

Scott, who appears unresponsive several minutes into the footage, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. An autopsy obtained by NBC News lists his cause of death as a collapsed lung.--

Another horrendous example of brutality done at the hands of the police and such a callous disregard for human suffering. Its sad that we had to wait this long to know about it until the department decided to release the footage.

To the other point (bolded), I find it so infuriating that this is used as an excuse to continue to use excessive force. Yes, technically, if you can speak, you are breathing...somewhat. But when you're having trouble breathing you're likely going to use what air you have left to communicate that you're under duress. I remember this being an excuse for what happened to Eric Garner, as if it made it okay to keep him in a choke hold

What happens when there are no recording devices?

We had that. Decades of police abuse going unchecked.

Yes....it's not that there's more police abuse...it's that it's being filmed more.

Cops are necessary assholes. But we need to train some of the assholishness out of them.

It seems that in the US, the phrase "I can't breathe" will be stronger than any spells of Gandalf.
Strangely, you do not quote the full text that the man was actually armed and hid it from the police who came on a call because of him, that the man complained about how he brandished a weapon.
But apparently, you expect that now if a person utters the magic phrase: "I can't breathe" - then the police must immediately remove the handcuffs, return his weapon, give him more of their weapons to breathe better and kneel and kiss his shoes... is this how it should be?

People come to their senses.

"I can't breathe", in this case, meant "I'm dying."

And?
You're trying to pass the blame on to the cops for another accident, but it's not their fault, no matter how much you try to pull it off.
Police officers acted according to instructions, they arrived on a call (I repeat, you consciously did not quote that the man was actually armed, they complained about him) and performed their duty.
You created a society full of weapons, not the evil Communists, not Putin, not even me. American cops are forced to act tough, because sentiment can be expensive.
But of course it's easier for you to say that this is a bad police force. Let me tell you a little secret - there are no simple answers to complex questions, especially when it concerns our life and its structure, one is superimposed on the other. Now, calling the police guilty of all sins, you are fighting with the investigation, but you really need to look for the reasons.

Any cop that uses restrictive airflow techniques to subdue a suspect has piss poor training.

I have a feeling that you are writing from the universe of elves, pink ponies, where if there are criminals, they shoot with water pistols.
I will repeat to you once again, this man from the subject was armed, the use of handcuffs to him is justified.

Being armed is not an automatic death sentence. Many people legally carry. For all the police knew, he had a CCW permit.

Handcuffing is fine but don't throw someone on the ground in a choking fashion to restrain, it's unwarranted in most cases.

Yes, and defunding would be a good start. Because we all know that less money means better training. Right?

The inevitable conclusion when generations of our "community protectors" have been trained to view citizens as the enemy and dehumanize them.

I would give more funds to police forces for better training.

Aha, thought you knew me, didn't you? :2razz: Not everyone is a partyline bobblehead.

That's cool, but more money isn't always the answer either. The police unions are going to have to work together with cities to allow better policing of their ranks. No pun intended.

Perhaps...now...hear me out on this...perhaps it would be easier for a cop to take a perpetrator seriously about the whole 'I cant breathe' schtick if they 1-hadnt just pulled a gun on a guy, 2-didnt have a gun on their possession, 3-Werent jacked up on meth, and 4-hadnt just sprinted away from the cops in an attempt to avoid arrest.

and no...that's NOT "An autopsy obtained by NBC News lists his cause of death as a collapsed lung." what the autopsy listed as a cause of death. The autopsy listed "collapsed lung, recent methamphetamine use, asthma, emphysema and heart disease."

Most of these incidents are poor training in restraint techniques, attitude, racial profiling, and less aggression in subduing every potential suspect. Some of it is covering up by ranking officers for PR purposes.

Or hear me out on this. When someone is saying they can't breathe you leave them restrained, but you get the **** off of them, especially when there is back up there.

I've watched enough episodes of 'Live PD' and 'COPS' to know that perps are often complaining erroneously when taken into custody. But you see how overly aggressive and nasty these young cops are. They can't wait to get into a fight and use force, there needs to be better training and less escalation of violence. Granted, there is always going to be accidents and tragic deaths in encounters but what these videos show is mostly unwarranted.

THESE cops did nothing of the sort. THESE cops approached a suspect that had been known to have had just pulled a gun on a man, one that ran from them at a full sprint, one that did in fact have a gun on him, and one that was under the influence of meth. They didnt beat him, fight him, or otherwise physically assault him. They stopped him, cuffed him, and following procedure rolled him onto his side to assist with his breathing and called for an ambulance.

You know what might help with some of those instances? If community leaders...ALL community leaders told the citizens in their communities to stop attacking cops, to stop running from cops. To stop fighting with cops. The FACTS show that in 90-95% of the instances of police shootings the suspect was shooting at either cops or other civilians. In the remaining 5-10% the overwhelming majority of incidents involve suspect fighting with cops trying to resist or evade arrest. Sure...we should address real instances of police brutality. The community should maybe hold their own citizens accountable as well.

Or **** it...let everyone go wild.

Its rather hard to take an armed suspecxt that just sprinted away from you seriously. When the situation was controlled they rolled him over onto his side.

But I have a better idea. YOU go do their job. I'm tired of hearing all you ****ing heroes that know how better to do their job. So get off your sofa and step up to the plate.

You weren't there, you don't know how much meth the man was under the influence of if any. And they subdued him hard enough to kill him or
was his 'I can't breathe' just timely?

Now, now don't throw a temper tantrum.

Did you actually read the autopsy? "collapsed lung, recent methamphetamine use, asthma, emphysema and heart disease."

Thats what killed him...that and being ****ing stupid.

You know...if you look back on the history of this site I readily point out and condemn actual incidents of abuse. This isnt abuse.
