I am ashamed of my Governor of Virginia

I havent decided if this is taking things out of context and making it a democrat against republican issue. Im trying to filter any :spin:... IF there is any.

If at first you don't secede, try, try again!............
Besides, the U.S. Civil war was about state's rights, not slavery.....;)

Yeah a State's right to have slavery:roll:

Either one it was still a violation of the Constitution against civil insurrections.:)

Oh, I am sure it will lead to that although it was not my intention.:liar2

I don't recall there being a Constitutional right for states to secede from the union because they didn't like the President who was elected.

Beside the point, the war of northern aggression was about the GUBMINT usurping state's rights, Lincoln's election was the icing on the cake.....;)

You are assuming that what states rights are accorded in the constitution trumps all others. No right is absolute. There has to be a balance.:)

The war of northern aggression? Apparently you never heard of the Battle of Fort Sumter. I don't recall there being a Constitutional right for State's to seize Federal forts, but I guess if you want to glaze over history and ignore relevant facts then that is your right.

What did he do exactly? I missed the story and the OP link doesn't work for me at work.

I like McDonnell, it's too bad he has to sometimes go and to crazy things like this. Luckily he partially revoked it.

from McDonnell's website:
it is important for all Virginians to understand that the institution of slavery led to this war and was an evil and inhumane practice that deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights

it was a terrible thing, but let's all celebrate our forefather's willingness to wage insurrection to preserve it!.

what a dope.

geo.

Thanks, Gina. Looks like he got right on it and corrected it, so good for him. It is correct to recognize slavery's role in the early history of the US. Of course, I don't think whites today should be made to pay for the sins of the past. Now it is just the partisans trying to get as much mileage out of it they can, I figure.

I think 2 things he says are spot on:

1) that the institution of slavery led to the war, but the war was primarily about whether the federal government could force a state to do something against it's will. That is why the insurrection is honored, not slavery.

2) that slavery deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights.

Hee hee hee Virginia resident here too. I saw the title of the thread and wondered, "Is this about McDonnell?" Ahhh, I was right. What an asshole.

I sent him an email this morning telling him that I was ashamed of what he was doing to our great state of va and that he was causing virginia to bcome an international Embarassment ( Urban Dictionary: embarassment ).:3oops:

Afraid I don't see the big deal. The war was about state's rights, not slavery. It IS part of our history. Revolution is part of our history. Fighting for what we believe in is part of our history. People do travel to see historic battlefields and monuments and Virginia has an abundance of them. So why is it shameful to designate a month to remembering all who fought and died in that war -on BOTH sides- , the families that were divided, the mark it's left on our country as a whole?

Are you suggesting that we have another civil war to create more tourist traps?:spin:

WTF are you talking about?

This part.
"People do travel to see historic battlefields and monuments and Virginia has an abundance of them."

The thing that made his comments shameful and reactionary is that he did not mention the northern soldiers who proudly served to save their country from insurrection.
