I imagine in the future the world will be divided up into fewer territories, regions, etc. International law will trump laws across all lands and sovereignty will become less and less an issue. That's why westernizing everyone now while we can is a lofty but admirable goal.

That is a matter of opinion. The United States will end up divided. We will end up breaking ourselves down into strict political categories and isolate each set of people. Eventually it will not be the "United" states of America, but just another continent with too many countries for its own good.
That depends if you consider that outcome a good thing. I sure as hell don't. I don't want world gov't.
Highly unlikely. We have two oceans separating us from the rest of the world.
But all the very best sci fi is written that way.
Get real...China is going to pass us up like we are standing still economically and in turn militarily too...
and they're going to do it with 90% of their country tide behind their back...
China's birth rate is declining. Its population is only growing 0.66% per year. That's not particularly fast, even compared to a lot of Western countries including the United States. Granted, China has a lot more people to begin with, which brings me to my second point...
If you look at China's age structure, it becomes apparent that China is going to get old before it gets wealthy. This poses another demographic challenge. These two problems - economic growth that will eventually level off, and population growth that will eventually level off and begin to decline - make it unlikely that China's GDP will surpass the United States' anytime soon.
Maybe some day it will happen. But that is a LONG way off, and there are all kinds of trends that could change in the meantime. As for military spending, China has never really shown a great deal of interest in the outside world, compared to other large states. Even if China ramps up its military spending as its economy grows, that doesn't guarantee that A) it will be an enemy of the United States, and B) that said military will destroy the United States.
There are many ways in which the United States could end that are both more likely and in the nearer future.
The last act of the United States will be the war with the rebel nations who refuse to join our new United Federation, which becomes this system's 1st solar superpower.
To hasten her end, on Earth Day, I drove my very, very, very thirsty V-8 muscle car to work.Being it's earth day and all I'm surprised none of the poll options is: Mother earth will die because you bastards refused to bike to work.
I've been reading a lot of history lately, especially Byzantine history, which has fascinated me, especially how you have this thousand-year empire that eventually just couldn't take any more.
It's made me wonder... how do you think the United States will end as a distinct political entity?
Proletarian revolution.
