But if America wants to take us by force, there is nothing we can do to stop them. End of story. There is simply no way in the universe that we would get a nuclear program off the ground, and that's saying nothing about getting buy in from Canadians. The only way we beat America is on the economic front, and even that is some David and Goliath shit. I made this argument a week ago. Canada has one defense and one defense only from an unhinged Donald: become a nuclear weapons state. It won’t stop the nonsense about tariffs etc. but it will draw a line against Donald even entertaining military overtures.

I am 100% convinced that the lasting legacy of Donald 2024 will be nuclear proliferation. I disagree. There is a clear history of no nuclear weapons state ever having to suffer any sort of land war initiated by another nation state on its home soil. Period. If Ukraine had nuclear weapons there would be no war there. If Iraq had nuclear weapons we would not have leveled it. The last 75 years have been a continuous history of nuclear weapons states being able to wage war on non-nuclear states with relative global impunity. Having nuclear weapons doesn’t immunize one from tension and conflict, but it does mean those conflicts will at most be waged through proxies external to one’s borders.

Nuclear weapons owned by Canada won’t stop Donald for running his mouth and antagonizing about Canada becoming a 51st state. But it does take any military intervention by Soldier Pete off the table.

Yes, it’s a coin flipping in the air but while we are less insane and quieter than Trump supporters there are still more of us then there are of them. (Though not the numbers we’d hope for - blame the dumbing down of America for that, our aggregate I.Q. has suffered for it)

I disagree. There is a clear history of no nuclear weapons state ever having to suffer any sort of land war initiated by another nation state on its home soil. Period. If Ukraine had nuclear weapons there would be no war there. If Iraq had nuclear weapons we would not have leveled it. The last 75 years have been a continuous history of nuclear weapons states being able to wage war on non-nuclear states with relative global impunity. Having nuclear weapons doesn’t immunize one from tension and conflict, but it does mean those conflicts will at most be waged through proxies external to one’s borders.

Nuclear weapons owned by Canada won’t stop Donald for running his mouth and antagonizing about Canada becoming a 51st state. But it does take any military intervention by Soldier Pete off the table.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your assessment of the situation, but the time to do it isn't now.

If Canada wishes to join the ranks of the nuclear enabled, we're talking about joining a race where the starting gun was fired 75 years ago.

It would paint a target on our backs, when we've got a big enough target on our backs already. It would justify escalation by simply starting the program.

Sorry, I don't see an upside to starting a nuclear defense program for Canada at this point in time. The quickest way for Canada to become the "51st state" would be to try and acquire nukes to prevent that.

After today's revelations by Mr. Trump and others (Obliterate Iran and remove Gazans from Gaza to build resorts) it is clear that Mr. Trump is insane and not fit to run the US Administration. He has also made overt threats of economic force against Canada and has refused to rule out using military force in Panama and Greenland/Denmark I believe that Canada is in dire peril from Mad-manifest destiny and American military force to balkanize or occupy Canada. Therefore I believe we must stop Mr. Trump by any and all means possible.

Canada has to defend itself but due to two generations of running down our military it has no chance of fighting off American military adventurism by normal military means. Therefore we should adopt a different strategy to protect ourselves from the looming threat from the south. To be clear, America is not the threat but Mr. Trump, a significant slice of the GOP, his potential junta of backers, his legionary lawyers and think-tank theists of the Project 2025 cult and that segment of the US Military which will follow Trump's orders in the absence of Congressional authorization. These are the segments of America which we must be prepared to hold at bay.

To do this we need the great equalizer - nuclear weapons. Canada should announce that it is withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and in three months will start building only man-portable tactical nuclear weapons. We can use these to make any invasion very costly to any invader but only on Canadian soil. Because it takes three months to legally withdraw from the NPT we should implore the US Congress to remove Trump from office as he is a threat to the whole human race. If the Congress does so, great! Then we suspend or revoke our withdrawal from the NPT. If the Congress does not, we use stored nuclear waste to make dirty bombs to deny routes of invasion and valuable resource sites from invaders until Our tactical nuclear demolition charges are ready.

This is an insane response to the madness of King Don, but it may just be insane enough to shock America out of its paralysis and allow them to mobilize against their imperial presidency. Either way we're fecked, so why not role the dice? MAD to deter Mad-Manifest Destiny.

This. People need to understand that "I don't think your nation should exist any longer" is going merit a very clear and very specific response by citizens of that country. Donald has just turned the vast majority of Canadian citizens into personal enemies--and he did it for no other reason than to feel better about himself.
