How to quit smoking?

cold turkey

Suffer the pain(you deserve it). It is truly a matter of discipline, like any addiction. Tell yourself you REFUSE TO GIVE IN to your urges, make a commitment to be true to yourself and you will be amazed at the results. It's triumph to quit.

I was a heavy smoker for 20 years, then one decided that was it. I was not prepared for the withdrawal symptoms of detox, and i had pretty much every negative side effect that has been recorded. The nightmares and night sweats lasted for well over a month, it was horrible. But...those awful experiences were enough to have me swear to never start again.

That is a great point and sort of an example of an exponential function. It is exactly the same for me. The withdrawl was terrible, but now that I have come so far, even though I often have intense cravings, the thought of having to start over immediately strikes those cravings down.

Even the other night when I was out drinking with friends, I had a few times when I almost caved in and had one until I thought about how crappy the next morning would be.

Stop smoking by not putting a cigarette into your mouth...

I didn't have a true withdrawal. I just wanted a cigarette like crazy. Really tuff not to cave.

I was smart enough to take my father's advice and not smoke. Course, not sure I would have smoked anyway, but...

At British prices, a twenty-pack a day habit will cost you more than $40,000 over the next twenty years assuming no price rise.

If you don't mind free advice from a socialistic NHS.... (you can't send off for the free nicotine patches!) ;)

what I love here in the US is to see some "poor" person bitching because they can't afford health insurance but they can afford to smoke two packs of smokes a day. my late uncle and his wife both smoked a couple of packs a day, they spent around $600 per month on smokes, but they couldn't afford health insurance.

Amazingly, some people can do that. Well, anyone can do that, but some people can do it easily. Lucky bastards.

I have come to understand that it is not so much the "things" (cocaine, cigarettes) that are addictive,
but rather it is a person that has an addictive personality that is the issue. No offense intended at all...
