How do you view today's society?

Of course, it depends on age, political leanings, financial status . . . but in your opinion, is it getting better or worse?

Those of us of a previous generation no doubt look back with nostalgia to what we view as ‘better times’, but are we wrong?
Each generation progresses and each thinks it has found the answers, but in my opinion, this generation has gone further than mere politics and is changing society itself based on a belief of how it ought to be and not just how it should be managed.

The problem with that is; what is the end result of equality, diversity and multiculturalism? A utopia or a disaster?
Is changing society a good or bad thing?

As far as personal freedom and standards of behavior, in the USA we are better off than ever. Overall, we can go about our lives without hassles caused by our identity. The environment is generally in better shape than it has been, but population growth threatens to undo the efforts at protecting the environment and public health. The disproportionate power of the extremely rich and megacorporation are a threat that needs to be addressed or our hard won progress to improve human rights and public health will be lost. Our near constant state of war is also a major threat to our safety and quality of life, especially if (or when) it escalates and expands. The other threat constantly over our heads is the mood swings of Wall Street investors. Right now their mood is right for relatively high employment, but that can change at any moment in response to a wide array of events.

I’d strongly disagree that equal rights has led to progress, anywhere. The amount of civil unrest amongst groups is at an all-time high and coupled with massive debt, mass unemployment, tens of millions receiving food subsidies and a huge obesity ticking time bomb health problem, I’d say the future is looking as grim for America as it is for Europe. I’d agree about Wall Street and being in a constant state of war.
You know, just as an aside, the western recession is in now in its seventh year and despite all the promises of growth and recovery, economic predictions and a turn-about on the horizon, from where I’m sitting it’s simply continuing and there’s no sign of it getting better. I stopped believing politicians and economists a long time ago.

What I see right across the west is a gigantic culture clash. Blacks, Muslims, gays, minorities . . . everyone trying to sell their own product and which produces special interest groups and civil unrest. That isn’t good for society.

So why not limit population growth by reducing immigration?

I'm a white guy, and I only like white women, preferably with light eyes. Not a matter of conscious choice or anything to do with social status--just what I go for. But I think there's something to your observation about Hispanic and Asian women.

The problem with letting in so many immigrants is that the societies they come from usually do not share our values. That would be all right if we were selective about who we admitted, and if we also expected them to adopt American values once here. But we aren't, and we don't. We cater to them--it's as if a lot of Americans felt guilty about their own culture and didn't want to insist on it being respected and preserved. The result is that many of these immigrants bring their uncivilized, lowlife ways with them and then stick to them. It's clear that the only thing many of them care about America is what then can get out of it.

My hometown of L.A. has become a much ruder, more uncouth place than it was when I was growing up here. I could give endless examples, but one recent experience comes to mind. I was in the sauna at my gym trying to relax after a workout, and several other people were quietly doing the same. But then a middle-aged guy with a marijuana leaf tattooed on his neck came in, pulled out his phone, and carried on a conversation in Spanish for at least ten minutes, in full voice, just as if no one else were there. When he finished, a young guy who spoke Spanish started chatting with him, and he spoke slowly enough that I could pick up that the guy had been asking the other party, about how his roosters had done in a fight he had money on. Not well, apparently, judging by all the bad language he was slinging around. I pictured this specimen living in some little house with corn growing in the front yard and dirt where the lawn used to be, with his mangy dog running loose around the neighborhood and Mexican music blaring out the windows night and day.

And there are many tens of thousands of low-life slobs like him, or worse, among the couple million illegal aliens who have invaded Southern California. There are so many they are the majority in many areas, and they often don't bother to try to respect American customs or speak English. These people take advantage of every government service they can by hook or by crook get their paws on, and they have imposed a back-breaking economic burden on what only forty years ago we proudly called the Golden State.

I see both. But since American citizens who do that have a right to be here, there is no way to prevent them from doing it by physically excluding them. In contrast, illegal aliens could be completely prevented from damaging this country simply by keeping them out. That could have been done effectively at any time during the past forty years or so by enforcing existing federal immigration laws. The problem has not been a lack of means to prevent the invasion, but rather a lack of will.

I'm anti immigration 100% but at some point you have to live in the real world and capitalize on what you can. Neverending bitching isn't going to do anything for you ultimately.


As I said things aren't all bad. Being an Anglo is a very coveted thing, being a good looking Anglo is an even more coveted thing, maybe the most coveted thing in the human world frankly if we're to go by near every romantic publicized whim of women the world over. Well its very difficult to measure the more etherial and intangible factors which will vary from person to person. One thing that can be measured though because it serves as the economic backdrop for all the others is what is called the misery index . This is the measure of the unemployment rate combined with the inflation rate. Here is the postwar US misery index and as you can see its unsurprising from this why the Carter administration only lasted a single term

What I see is white Christian bigots losing their disproportionate amount of power and privilege and whining about it a lot.* Civil unrest in the USA is much lower than it was in the 1960s and early 70s.

*the irony is that lower class/lower income whites never had that much power, but they felt like they did as long as the elites were white and Christian.

Reducing immigration would only solve the overpopulation problem locally, where it is not that acute. The USA is much less crowded than the rest of the world. The problem of growing populations will continue, and will continue to impact the USA, even if we could reduce immigration.
