How did WW2 start?

Putin says it started when France and Britain allowed Hitler to annex the Sudetenland. Hitler did that, then he annex the rest of Czechoslovakia which wasn't in the agreement. This started the war.

Some say the Japanese invasion of China.

Others Hitlers invasion of Poland a few years later.

To many Americans it was Pearl Harbor a couple of years after that.

Generally I belive it was the Poland thing.
 
The failures of the Western Allies and the Soviets to come to an agreement against Germany in 1938 certainly falls on their shoulders, but in the end they would never have been in that position had Hitler not forced it.

Attempts to pin the blame for starting WWII on the French, British, or Russians, or even the Polish, is nothing more than historical revisionism.

If you want to look at it that way, you can say "WW1 led to WW2 which led to the Cold War and the bombing of North Vietnam."

And WWI was just a continuation of the Franco-Prussian War.

Cold war was two former allies turning on each other for reasons totally unrelated to either world war. WW2 was literally a continuation of WW1, same enemies fighting each other after a brief two-decade gap.

I don't think that matters at all. There was zero gap between the end of WWII and the Cold War.

In Europe, WW2 was literally a continuation of the first world war. The Cold War had nothing to do with either of the two.

One could say, we should have let Hitler take Russia and then swept in from behind and mopped up the mess, especially by making use of our atom bombs. But, alas...

You misunderstood. CW had nothing to do with WW1 or 2.

Of course, one could say, we should have let Hitler take Russia and then swept in from behind and mopped up the mess, especially by making use of our atom bombs. But, alas...

Hitler came to power on the promise that he'd stop the spread of communism in Germany. He did that. Then Hitler goes after the communist Soviet Union.

Sound familiar?

How about this. Franco in Spain puts down the communists. And that's before WWII.

That is not why WW2 started. It started over unresolved grievances and territorial disputes from WW1. Hitler did not attack the Soviets until Jun, 41. The war began in early 39, with the Germans retaking several neighboring countries like Austria and Czechoslovakia.

Unlke America, in WW1 the losers populations were left destitute and abandoned, unlike what the USA did after WW2 with Germany and japan. WW1 ended with an incentive to have a “do over”.

Oh wait, that was WW1.
 
WWII started because of WWI.

I don't see why it needs to be an either/or. Both agreements can be seen as factors in the lead up to WW2 and both Britain/France and the USSR can be seen as guilty of appeasing Hitler for their own benefit. I think there are efforts from all sides to present history in a particular way for modern purposes. This push by Putin is clearly an example of that but he is far from alone in it.
 
Yeah, WW II started the day after the Treaty of Versailles was signed..

And give credit where credit is due... This guy called it:

As German troops were invading Russia on June 22nd 1941 there were trains of Russian raw materials heading from Russia to Germany..In other words Stalin was supplying German with raw materials right up to the day Germany attacked Russia..Materials Germany needed to fight France and Britain, and then Russia.

Talk about appeasing Hitler?
 
I'm guessing Putin conveniently ignores the Russian-Nazi pact?

The first act of war was japan's invasion of manchuria however that did not cause other nations to declare war on japan. Others say it was germany invading poland which did cause france and england to declare war on germany. It wasn't until japan bombed pearl harbor that got us involved that some people think was the start. So I guess one could say there were several incidents combined that caused the world to be at war.
 

Yeah, but when Britain declared war on Germany, because of the British 'empire', that start hostilities on other continents besides Europe. And brought in troops of other Nationalities on the side of the Brits...African, NZ, Australian, Canadian, etc..

The 'world' really got involved when Britain declared war on Germany.
 



Britain was trying to talk America into getting into the war.

A huge segment of the American population was isolationist and anti war. Europeans fought wars all the time and this was just another European war.
 
Combination of many things.

- The harsh and humiliating terms of the Treaty of Versailles which forced Germany into a huge economic recession and deepened German hatred of the allies.
- The collapse of the League of Nations after the US pulled out from joining
- Japanese aggression going unpunished
- The rise of extreme political ideologies in Western and Eastern Europe.
- Adolf Hitler

and the War came anyway. A valuable lesson learned for the US
