Okay, new smartphone.

I got a call today and couldn't answer it in time. I figured they just hung up, or it got sent to voice mail, whatever. No problem. Then, like a few seconds later, I hear a chime and check for a message. There isn't one. So I check text messages. And from ME, Maggie, it shows my phone sent the following text message to the caller:

I'm eating. I'll call you back later.

Anybody have a clue?
 
That is why I do not want a smart phone.

Yes, go into your settings and change your auto response. Use the manual to find where that is. Is it a previously used one? Then find where "reset defaults" is and use that. Manuals are available on line.

I don't have any idea, but I can tell you mine does some pretty strange things now and then. I do find it helpful to restart it every couple of days. Recently it just decided to not send photos for a little while. That's really an important feature for me because of my work. It's fine now, and I didn't do a damn thing.

What Summerwind said. You (or someone) set an auto response for missed calls. Drill down into your settings (either from main screen or from the text message screen, I don't know the exact setup of your phone) and see if you can find the setting. Clear it. Try NOT to "reset defaults," because if you're not careful and just start restoring defaults, you may reset the wrong thing and reset your entire phone.

They missed caller probably didn't leave a message.
 

can't help you Maggie. When I want to make a call I turn the crank on the box on the wall and get connected to Mabel down at the switching office (if she is working) and she tries to connect me. But you have to be careful because sometimes Mabel listens in.

Oh Maggie - one other gift I thought of for your friends is tickets to see the David Sadaris christmas elf play that we saw in Chicago last year ---- if it is back for another run. That was great fun and I think you all would have a ball.

She said it was new to her, which means if she doesn't reset defaults there may be other things the previous user had set up that she'd have to address one by one instead of reset defaults which is what they should've given her so it only does the extras she wants it to. Or so is my thought. Had it been hers for a while, I'd agree with you.
 
Here's a conversation I had with my smartphone:

Me: Hello, HAL. Do you read me, HAL?
HAL: Affirmative, Dave. I read you.
Me: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.
Me: What's the problem?
HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Me: What are you talking about, HAL?
HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
Me: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL.
HAL: I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.

I'm still not sure why it insists on calling me "Dave."

The call was from the visiting nurse telling me she was on her way. She actually GOT the text from me which we thought was pretty damned funny after she arrived. (I saw it on mine as I'd sent it. Saw it on hers as she received it.) Weird.

WTF is an auto-response???? OMG. I'm going hunting.

Reseting defaults should not do that, but she can back them up to her card before she resets to be safe... good point.
 
Under Settings/Call Sethtings, there's "Reject call with message" When I tap that I get a list of six or seven possibilities...the one I sent being one of them. Others include things like "I'm driving now. I'll call you back" etc. But while it lists them, it doesn't show a way to shut them all down. That's just damned weird. When I quickly picked up the phone, I must have touched SOMETHING that automatically rejected the call and sent the message. Which is why it only rang twice. The gal who GOT the text said it sent her right to voice mail. And then she got the text message.

Damn. Gotta' figure how to shut it off -- or what I did that automatically rejected the call.

Just thought I would include a resolution to this thread for others. After spending 30 minutes on the phone with technical support, here's what we found:

First of all, you need to know that I didn't mean to automatically send the call to voice mail. I was trying to answer it...picked it up on the fly upside down and fumbled to answer it. Apparently, the phone has an automatic feature in it to "Reject with Message". And when I fumbled with the phone, I accidentally slid up that menu from the bottom of the answer screen and accidentally chose that feature: Reject call with following message: And then a choice of about six options comes up....like "I'm driving. WCB soon." or "I'm in a meeting. Text only." Whatever. And you can customize (at an earlier time) what message choices pop up.

Jesus. What on earth have we become?? :rofl

Mystery solved.
 
I know i'm old when the phones are outsmarting myself..
