The worrisome trend in children too young to be vaccinated underscores the need for older kids and adults to get their shots to protect those around them, said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Since mid-December, as the highly contagious omicron variant has spread furiously around the country, the hospitalization rate in these youngest children has surged to more than 4 in 100,000 youngsters, up from 2.5 per 100,000.

That compares with a current rate of about 1 per 100,000 for children ages 5 to 17, according to CDC data.

There point was that the un-vaccinated pose the most risk to the un-vaccinated because it's looking like the Omicron is as deadly as Delta in those who are not vaccinated, including children who have no choice.

The latest data I could find is that there are about 19 million children in the US aged 0 to 4 years old. That would translate to 760 children hospitalized across roughly 3 weeks. That's not good, of course, but hopefully this puts it in some perspective.

Sotomayer made the claim and I believe she is being roasted online for it as we speak. Based on my own searching, federal estimates are closer to ~3,000 children being hospitalized. This is why we should always double check numbers that we hear, and also put them in context.

That's possible. If there are really 100,000 people in ICU due to COVID well, I don't know what the per-day ICU cost is but I'm sure it's well over $1,000 per day, which is a LOT of money down the toilet...

Be very wary of “kids hospitalized with COVID-19” - that is vastly different from “kids hospitalized due to COVID-19”. Everyone in the hospital testing positive for COVID-19 is “hospitalized with COVID-19”, even if they are being treated for a broken arm, a blood clot or cancer.

There are 96,000 ICU beds in the US so I have a seriously hard time believing there are 100,000 unvaccinated ICU patients.
