The number of homeless children in the United States has surged in recent years to an all-time high, amounting to one child out of every 30, according to a comprehensive state-by-state report.Titled "America's Youngest Outcasts," the report being issued Monday by the National Center on Family Homelessness (NCFH) calculates that nearly 2.5 million American children were homeless at some point in 2013. The number is based on the Department of Education's latest count of 1.3 million homeless children in public schools, supplemented by estimates of homeless pre-school children not counted by the DOE.
Child homelessness increased by 8 percent nationally from 2012 to 2013, according to the report (PDF), which warned of potentially devastating effects on children's educational, emotional and social development, as well as on their parents' health, employment prospects and parenting abilities.
NCFH — a part of the private, nonprofit American Institutes for Research — says remedies for child homelessness should include an expansion of affordable housing, education and employment opportunities for homeless parents, and specialized services for the many mothers rendered homeless due to domestic violence.
The problem is particularly severe in California, which has one-eighth of the U.S. population but accounts for more than one-fifth of the homeless children with a tally of nearly 527,000.

With a country so rich in natural resources its a damn shame we cannot take care of those who are the least among us. "The measure of a civilization is how it treats its weakest members."

living in a shelter providing temporary living arrangements (including hotels and motels), congregate shelters and transitional housing;
Counting those in shelters, hotels or motels as "homeless" is not very honest. Much like saying that those receiving "safety net" benefits bringing them above the FPL are still "really" still below the FPL because the cash value of that aid is not counted.

I suppose it depends on what point one is trying to make.
In some contexts, I can see it as entirely legitimate to describe someone as “poor” who is receiving outside support in order to maintain a comfortable standard of living, but who is not able to earn enough on his own to be self-sufficient. Such a situation can be used to support a claim about how well our society takes care of those who cannot take care of themselves, but it remains, nevertheless, highly unfortunate when one is not able to honestly earn his own living.
6 recovery summers in, with a POTUS who WILL NOT REST, and just oodles of hope and change.
This is what voting democrat gets you.

This has been a growing problems since Reagan. Please do your research for crying out loud.
And please tell me what republican policy has been brought to the table to solve this?
Lowering taxes and getting rid of regulations ????
Hmmmm.......so its really bad in California ?
In the left wing State thathas the highest poverty rates in the Country ?
Of course the percentage of homelessness among children is up in the U.S. compared to about eight years ago.With a country so rich in natural resources its a damn shame we cannot take care of those who are the least among us. "The measure of a civilization is how it treats its weakest members."
Your side owns this.
It seems to me that a large portion of the homeless children are runaways. They'd rather be on the streets than be abused on a daily basis.
