Well then they need to remember that the Hippie subculture failed.... failed big time. Because as soon as you believe that there are "no rules" then somebody will come along and prove it.

The word "hippie" was a universal calling card for all and I do mean "all" types of folks and that's why it was a bust from the get-go. From San Fran to Boston and Miami to Milwaukee there were many wanna-bees and look-alikes. Bottom line was they all needed money and all chose different means of getting it. There were in my opinion vey genuine hippies and the thing that stood out about them was they wanted no part of the "can we hang out with you" hippes or phonies. The real ones were farmers that created their world apart from not only America (Amerika) but from everything in general and more power to them. "The best things in life are'nt things."
I can remember David Suskind interviewing hippies to find out what they were and why. The hilarious thing was some of them were superbly dressed as if they just came from The Gap's hippe section. Accordingly, they were criticized by a young black woman as being as phony as they were. I knew a couple just like them; perfectly dressed in flower power clothes paid for by their parents. Very nice innocent folks but, well you know.
From those I knew SDSers and had no use for them as they were non- definative radicals seeking only publicity for a cause they knew had little committed following They were gansters with wigs. There were of course the druggies and nothing needs to be said that hasn't already been said here. Then there were those that joined "the movement"to stay out of Nam by having good ol' mom n' pop pick up the tab for four years of Liberal Arts "eduction."
All in all, looking back it was maybe like every "lost generation" as someone called it. I knew some very nice, genuine people and of course I knew some who I am certain are now dead or in prison either here or in some other third orld country. We gave too much ear to the hippie phemenon and from what I see now we have not learned that lesson.
