Here’s a Republican pairing that should haunt Democrats’ dreams for the next two years: Jeb Bush and Rob Portman. That, at least, is what Harold Ickes warned Friday. What could derail the Democratic Party in 2014? A combined Jeb Bush-Rob Portman ticket.

A Bush-Portman ticket could doom Democrats in Bush’s native Florida and in Portman’s Ohio, Ickes said, and Bush’s Hispanic support would make Colorado a difficult lift as well.....snip~

Sounds like Ickes would prefer to run Hillary against Bush and Portman. What do you think?

Bush does have the ability to pull Latino voters. I don't even see Portman being a VP. Moreover Kasich can pull more of Ohio by himself.

Kasich from Ohio can handle Hillary.....and he can pull Democrats. So he would be more of a threat than Portman for the Demos.

I don't think dems fear a republican named Bush winning the presidency. Jeb may be different and in lots of ways better than W. but the Bush name still doesn't wear well with the public. Kasich on the other hand could bring Ohio with him which is key to anyone getting to 270. Kasich is no conservative, however. So he would struggle in the primaries.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we usually see the seemingly compatible pairing. Would it not be refreshing to see them paired as Kasich/Christie or Bush/Paul?

IMO, Christie won't run for POTUS or VP (too many skeletons in his closet) and no presidential candidate would pick either Paul.

Those aren't skeletons in his closet. They're chicken bones. (Sorry, just couldn't help myself.)

I agree, I don't see Portman being a VP candidate either. I personally think a Kasich/Rubio or Kasich/Susanna Martinez the Hispanic Governor of New Mexico would be a better pair.

On the other side I find it very interesting Jim Webb has formed an exploratory committee for his run for the presidency. If I was Hillary I would look at Jim Webb seriously as a VP candidate on the Democratic side. Of course with me, it is all electoral college math I look at instead of ideology. But in real life it doesn't work that way.

I think there will be a surge on the Democratic side for Warren instead of Hillary.

Several have offered that recently. Upon looking into it myself, the more I read about what today's liberals really want it seems Warren is the better choice over Clinton. For Democrats it appears we will see a bit of a divide in the primary if they both run.

Christie is damaged goods, at least at this point in time. A pre-bridgegate Christie was a Democratic nightmare. Not now.

Hillary may be too much a war hawk for a lot of Democrats and they haven't forgave her for her AYE vote for the Iraq war. From an ideological standpoint, I do think Warren is more in line with more Democrats today than Hillary. But that is a personal opinion. Electoral wise, I do not think it makes a difference. At least not yet.

On the Republican side I do think it does make a big difference electoral wise. Bush could deliver Florida, 29 EV, Kasich Ohio, 18 EV, two states that are a must if the Republicans are to have a decent shot at winning the white house in 2016. They can't afford to lose either.

Portman is far better respected in Ohio by the alpha members of the GOP

If another Bush got voted into office, it would prove this country is full of idiots who vote by name only. Bush #1 wasn't good enough for a 2nd term. And no one really thinks Bush #2 was very good. But we're going to vote in another one - named Jeb for that matter?

Bush #1 was a far better man than the clown how beat him Bush #2 was far better than the two hypocrites he beat. and if its Jeb vs Cankles, anyone, especially a male, who votes for Hildabeast ought to have their head examined

Jeb Bush even looks presidential .. and he and either VP candidate can definitely beat Monica Lewinsky's impeached ex-boyfriend's wife.

But Jeb Bush has made statements that he thinks illegal aliens should get amnesty.

That gives me concern that he, like his brother, is more in the hip pocket of big business (plummeting wage scales caused by mass amnesty of illegal aliens) that wants wage scales reduced to thereby lower costs, even though that would clearly create a recession .. or worse.

Maybe it's just "get me elected" rhetoric, but I'd need to know that Bush The Third doesn't want to one-up his family predecessors with a "legacy" a la Obama's party drive: thinking millions of illegals are "undocumented Republicans", a definite error in thinking.

I need to know a little more about Jeb Bush, though I really want to back him because he's electable and can likely beat whatever novelty candidate the liberal Democrats throw up (pun intended).

He may look presidential, and I've heard he's sharper than his brother, but if he's more right-wing Corporate Global Expansionist than centrist American citizen, he could actually be worse than .. well .. you know who's wife. (Okay, I've exaggerated there, but you get my drift.)

They could very well do that. I find it extremely pleasing that Bush is being considered as a top contender. The name recognition is huge and that means people will be going back to something more familiar in Post-Obama America. Though, its extremely likely neither Bush 41 or 43 will have any direct role in the Presidency. It will be awesome watching another Bush take-over.

I don't necessarily like Portman. I have never seen him as Presidential material. However, what about Romney?? VP isn't that big of a deal and the GOP has already vetted him, so it's not like no one will be shocked with his background. Romney was pretty influential with helping the Republicans win the 2014 seats behind the scenes and there is talk of him running again in 2016. I can easily see him in a huge public role in the next Republican Administration. Though, if the Republicans want someone "folksy" like Biden, then they shouldn't choose either of them. Go with either Carson or Jindal they may even please the libertarians and go with Cruz. After all, McCain went with Palin. Alaska isn't necessarily a huge needed swing state.

I like the Bush famliy so you're wrong there. However, if you are speaking about the general public here. I understand.

I don't think Jeb will run or even wants to run for president....but for his son, Jeb Jr.....he might have political aspirations.

Whoever the GOP picks to run...it's usually someone who is or was a governor.

Hope springs eternal and all that. Its fine to put together your 2016 Republican fantasy team, but that is all it will be. Barring some major, major event, the math does not work for the Cons. They will not see the White House, except as a guest, for another decade...

IMO, Christie won't run for POTUS or VP (too many skeletons in his closet) and no presidential candidate would pick either Paul.

By that logic, Clinton isn't going to run either, as she has far more skeletons in her closet than he.

Regardless that he was eventually cleared of any wrong doing or involvement?

I don't know anybody in Ohio who likes Kasich.

Funny, I thought that the Ohio economy was one of the better ones in the mid-west, mainly due to Kasich.

And still no one in Ohio likes or supports him. That seems rather odd.

You generally get someone more qualified and experienced in running government that way. Kinda says a lot about where we are at this point in time.

He is no more damaged goods than the Benghazi pin-up girl.

LOL Who did you ask? That person in the mirror? Kasich just won re-election by almost 1,000,000 votes. He won 64% to 33%. That's an impressive number and a pretty solid indication that lots of people in Ohio like Kasich.
