An Auckland ice cream shop is proving a hit with its new salmon ice cream, selling out its unusual flavour just two weeks after it was first served to intrigued customers.
Fugitoto Ice Cream in Epsom has seen a bump in customers as locals put their taste buds to the test by trying a flavour not usually seen in New Zealand.
“They wanted to incorporate more New Zealand ingredients and thought salmon and wasabi would be a good idea to try,” Mushan added.
Fugitoto uses real king salmon sourced from the South Island, which they have to order in bulk.

One person writing on Instagram found it quite “pleasant”, describing the taste as “a creamy salmon dip but frozen, flaky and slightly sweet”.

What, no carp cream? I might take some cat cream.. Salmon, oh hell no. Like fish, but salmon, nope! Too damn 'fishy'.

On the pic; that's ice cream in NZ? Looks like 'baby diaper surprise!' What's color is it this time?..

I don't know, this story smells fishy.

"baby diaper surprise" - LOL :)

I enjoy salmon very much.
I enjoy ice cream very much.
But there are some flavors that should never be mixed.
Salmon flavored ice cream would be one of those.

How about pineapple on pizza, or ketchup on eggs?

Does not mind a Hawaiian pizza from time to time, not my first choice though.
Not a big fan of ketchup in general let alone on eggs.
My oldest brother was a ketchup nut. Put it on anything and everything.

Hawaiian pizza is a delicacy. I can eat pineapple on few things, including raw, but pizza and glazed on ham are two things for which I believe pineapple was intended. :)

Wouldn't. I do like salmon patties, though.

Patties!?

You need to eat well curated salmon with creme cheese, chopped onion and capers.

Patties, good grief.

I'm living in Auckland at the moment, and if Epson wasn't the other side of town I would give it a try. My initial reaction was 'yuk' when reading about salmon ice cream, but then thought about it more. I make a home made smoked salmon pate which is fundamentally sweet smoked salmon and cream. It's absolutely delicious, so my only real concern about the salmon ice cream is that the salmon doesn't appear to be smoked. But then I thought again back to a week long raft fishing trip I did in Alaska where we basically lived on steamed/boiled fresh caught salmon and cream cheese on crackers for the week. Salmon and cream again, and not smoked. So who knows, I might actually like salmon ice cream more than my initial reaction to the idea might indicate. Note to those that have never tried NZ ice cream - it's usually somewhere between pretty damn good and exceptionally good. Not something that helps my waistline when we are over here.

They're great. I like to top them with cocktail sauce or mustard and have rice on the side.

Breading and rice. No doubt you leave the table full. 😉

Have to admit that I don't use salmon for patties, but a good fish pattie topped with a little vinegar or tartare sauce is a rather delightful thing. In fact, I can see those being on my menu in the very near future now that someone has mentioned them.

We can all use a starch to fill us up as long as we are not health conscious.
I enjoy stuffed clams.

Tarter sauce or lemon, never vinegar.

Peace
