Has memorial day just become a day to glorify US foreign policy?

If I hear about paying respects to men who died for our "freedumb" one more time I'm going to barf up my innards.

Memorial day has become nothing but a day of jingoism and glorifying a foreign policy conducted for the benefit of Halliburton and other multinational corporations.

And what makes it worse is that a lot of feauxgresives who understand what US policy is really about will always say "b-b-b-b-b-b-but we need ta respect the dead". The whole spectacle makes me ill.

Respect for the dead is fine. It's when we start to deify them that I have a problem.

Is that what you guys do? I mean, I think an escalated sense of gratitude and solemnity is required when considering the age of most of these folks...they didn't pick their wars, they simply fought them so others wouldn't have to, and they deserve the utmost respect. But I didn't know you guys deified them down there...that doesn't sound right?

It's a lovely country, so why not? I've been there twice; also Austria, Poland, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Ireland, Italy, the Canaries, Minorca. They actually have toilet paper and electricity in Europe, can you believe that?

Not sure...but the ones we're asking to take the same risk today likely do.

Don't confuse me with some kind of hawk...plus, I'm Canadian, so outward displace of patriotism isn't really my thing...hehe.. But I make an exception for soldiers...they earn a little ceremony, I think. You're not honoring war, you're honoring those who get caught up in it. It doesn't have to be controversial.

Don't take it out on our soldiers. Honor them.

Take your grievances up with your Government

Never said that.

I just don't think I should have to pretend our dead troops died "for our freedom" in order to be considered respectful. If not, then today isn't "memorial day", it's just another "**** YEAH 'MURICA" day like Independence day.

Germany! Started two world wars responsible for the deaths of millions upon millions of humans not to mention the roughly six million Jewish people that were slaughtered. I wouldn’t spend a second there.
