Harvard Tells Students To Move Out By Sunday Due To Coronavirus, Classes Moving Online

With 700 cases in the US, and only 7 cases in Mexico, I know which side of the Wall I will be spending my vacation. Hola Puerto Vallarta!!

Just be sure to duck when the cartel wars start. Not even tourist areas like the resorts are safe.

You still won't have a diploma from Harvard. Who do you think that job will choose? The guy from Harvard or the guy with a mini tech degree? And the difference in pay? 6 figures

Sure. And do you suppose the degree is the ONLY reason people attend Harvard? And would a Harvard degree have the same cachet if it resulted entirely from online classes?

It appears Harvard University is moving the entire university to online classes. God only knows how this will translate to graduate programs, particularly in medicine. But my feeling is, if what might be the top medical university in the world feels the need to take these precautions, they might know what they're doing.

Maybe they are more worried about protecting their over-priced faculty than they are their students.

You may find this grim, but it can come to what they will do

Coronavirus: Extraordinary Decisions For Italian Doctors - The Atlantic
Now the Italian College of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI) has published guidelines for the criteria that doctors and nurses should follow in these extraordinary circumstances. The document begins by likening the moral choices facing Italian doctors to the forms of wartime triage that are required in the field of “catastrophe medicine.” Instead of providing intensive care to all patients who need it, its authors suggest, it is becoming necessary to follow “the most widely shared criteria regarding distributive justice and the appropriate allocation of limited health resources.”

The principle they settle upon is utilitarian. “Informed by the principle of maximizing benefits for the largest number,” they suggest that “the allocation criteria need to guarantee that those patients with the highest chance of therapeutic success will retain access to intensive care.

Same could be said of Detroit and many other US cities. I will spend my vacations on the fun side of the Wall, and its not Trumps side that's for sure.

Cant fault Harvard for not being proactive. First they limit the number of Asian students they bring in as new students...now they are trying to send everyone home...so...they are at least trying.

Lol. They've been super proactive.

Common law requires the parties to a contract to adhere to its terms unless excused for a valid reason.

The existence of a pandemic is not a valid reason for evicting people and would not even be considered as such in the case of any other landlord. And even if there were a valid reason for mass eviction, that would still not justify them in billing for housing that was not provided.

Actually acts of God are almost always exclusions to fulfilling contracts and their only obligations is to provide the class whether it be remote or in the classroom

Yes and yes...people don't attend Harvard for the party life...they attend it for the prestigious degree it earns them. As I pointed out my neighbor's son is a professor at Princeton. He got his degree at Harvard. His father attended Duke University and his mother Columbia. My husband never was able to graduate even high school, because his father left and his mom sent them to work instead of school. My husband was 13 at the time. He's a natural whiz at math. He can literally do calculus problems in his head. He is also very good at fixing things. My neighbor's son also speaks Spanish fairly well. They get together and talk numbers, etc until my head hurts. I really think my husband should go back to school and college, but life and responsibilities have called.

Shock Doctrine.

Move college on-line, charge the same or more.

You can fire people right & left, go full on Phoenix U, and make MORE money!

What's not to love?

:)

Pandemics do not prevent fulfillment of a lease.

Your statement about leases not being legally binding is incorrect.

Have most people never had online meetings? Using Teams, Skype, Zoom, etc?

I have no idea why teens and adults cant have complete and interactive classes online. Labs? No but classes yes.

And younger kids, with supervision, should be able to also. It would be interesting to see what changes would be needed for their teaching plans, for early learners. It would be a very interesting challenge but possible.

Sure, if people want party life they can attend San Diego State. It would certainly be a lot cheaper. But if there is no difference in value between a completely online experience and actually attending the university, where one would interact with professors and other students, use the laboratory and library facilities, partake in athletics and extra-curricular activities, etc., why not just shut the campus down for most students permanently? That way they could be on a sort of never-ending Spring Break, partying and spreading the virus to strangers and all of their friends and family around the world rather than being monitored in dorms.

Early learning is hard because, as you mentioned, they require so much supervision. If it takes 1 adult to supervise each child, that's a lot of workers taken out of the workforce.

Harvard formally declared that people should NOT self quarantine?

Did they even bother to give a reason why students should not self quarantine in their rooms and have food delivered to their rooms?

I would think Harvard University declaring people should not isolate themselves are home and instead should go live on the street would be THE top national story.

West Point has told cadets to stay home on an extended spring break and the Air Force Academy is sending cadets home. I haven't heard about Annapolis yet they'd probably do the same.

The National Defense University at Ft. McNair in Washington DC is going completely online. College and university Rotc cadets on scholarship lose nothing while those Rotc frosh and sophs not on scholarship will need to deal with the college directly.

SecDef Esper and Deputy SecDef #2 at Pentagon strictly teleconference and each of 'em exists in a bubble basically. And so on.

No university public or private, civilian or military wants a student body and faculty concentrated on campus in housing and in classes circulating this contagion and then have to deal with the stricken students and faculty. It's perfectly understandable. Those sent home aren't much complaining about it either, nor would I. Because stuff happens.

Many, even most, households have at least one adult at home now anyway, either working from home or laid off.

So you want to send into circulation a bunch of delivery runners dashing all over the campus dropping and knocking food at dorm doors. Delivery runners who would be or become carriers. Swarming all over the campus...several times a day into evening. That would be of course after you found and commissioned all these healthy delivery people to begin with plus their means of delivery.

Forget about your thinking Harvard should be the TOP national story because your post wins the prize.

So in addition to telling people to go live on the street, you also claim that all meals on wheels and all other plans to assure that people are denied food. That is because you figure the more people who freeze to death and starve to death the less the virus can spread? Why not be merciful and at least advocate for mass executions?

I gather you"re a Bernie Sander's supporter for his claiming that Communist China is to be praised by having killed 50,000,000 of their people to improve their economy.

Bernie luv him is a disaster on foreign relations and policy; international affairs.

I've been with Geritol Joe all the way because we need calm leadership that's steady and stable.

This is in a stark contrast to the hysteria and chaos of Trump & Fanboy Rowers. NYSE btw said today no floor trading so starting Monday everything will be done electronically and remotely. Eat at home.

Yes, but is that an ideal long term situation? Work from home, take care of 2 (or more) kids, plus be responsible for monitoring their education sessions, all at the same time?

For the Harvard students, what home? What food?

President Trump has done far more and faster than President Obama did with H1N1. The chaos and hysteria was deliberately created by Democratic leadership and the MSN - both owned and controlled by the richest corporations and people on earth.

Most people are fools. This massive and deliberately caused crash will make trillions for those behind the panic and hysteria they are causing. The stock has not vanished at all. Rather, it is being driven to bargain basement prices. Who has the money to buy it at bottomed out prices? The richest people and companies on earth. Then as the stocks again rise it is 100% pure, free profit.

This will be the greatest and most sophisticated theft in at least a thousand years. They even want the government to loan the money to buy it at zero interest!

But you don't understand any of this, do you?

Hey, your understanding is your understanding.

Have fun with it.

I wouldn't wanna deny a guy his fun. Or even try.

What about any of this is ideal? Who mentioned that?

We do what we have to do. Our governor was very clear that we should recognize that it is "not every day life as usual" and to adjust and do our best to adapt to "a new reality" for as long as it takes. (Not forever obviously)
