TEL AVIV – A key Hamas official has confirmed reports from last week the terror group held meetings with "important Democrats."

Ahmed Yousuf, chief political advisor to Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, told the Maannews Palestinian news website that Hamas officials met recently with high-ranking American figures, "especially members of the Democratic party."

Well, one is reluctant to take a terrorist leader solely at his word.

But among those who would be likely to do such a thing would be Ted Kennedy, David Bonior, Jim McDermott, Dick Durbin . . . because they are some who have done very similar things in the past.

To say nothing of Democratic fossils like Jimmy Carter and Ramsey Clarke, who have historically found few enemies of the US they didn't want to cozy up to.

Unless there is a transcript of an official meeting, or the very least a mutual recognition that it occurred, from more than one party then I'm afraid this has to be written off a blatant propaganda. Hmm... that's not a terribly helpful source. I would guess that the British contingent of these 'important Democrats' was George Galloway. Hardly a man likely to be deciding foreign policy anytime. For the French it could be their Socialist candidate Ms. Royal, she caused a storm of controversy there by, I think, not denying that she would be prepared to talk to Hamas. Not me Navy, I'm not sure I'd label myself a 'lefty' but I certainly don't cite CNN. If I cite news it will usually be the BBC. What I meant when I said it wasn't terribly helpful a source was referring to the content of the Hamas statement, not the validity or journalistic integrity of your news source. Hamas just comes out and says something, doesn't mean a hell of a lot in the grand scheme of things. Unless they were to say they will acknowledge and accept Israel's existance, but that's not likely.

Mark my words, Bush will ''cut and run" when politically convenient only he will claim that he was never against dialog, never against a settlement, never against talking to Syria, Iraq, or whomever or whatever the hell it takes to bring our troops home safely and unharmed.
