From the original screenplay, to the costumes, the actors and characters, the original score and theme song, the cinematography, and the dialogue, for my money, it will always be Chinatown.

I am biased against such pics, as I am not a fantasy or science fiction fan. Gave it a try and liked the special effects, but was struck by how bad the acting of the main characters was.

I have to brag: as a New York cab driver, my late dad picked up Jimmy Cagney for a ride. When time to pay up, he said (with the usual financial genius that drove mom crazy):

“It’s on me, Mr. Cagney.”

“How did you know it was me?”

“Couldn’t miss that red hair.”

Cagney gave my dad his tie clip, a brass thing depicting a railroad train engine, which he treasured. I have it in a sock drawer somewhere.

I am resisting judging posters by some absurd film choices...but it's darn hard.

It is impossible to say which is "the greatest" but I find any of the following persuasive:

Gone with the Wind - managed to see in a movie theater and was blown away... favorite line "As God as my witness I shall never go hungry again" (or something to that effect).
Citizen Kane
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Godfather 2, even more than Godfather 1.
To Kill a Mockingbird

LOL, good one. Not exactly one of my top faves, but definitely my fave by Kubrick.

Some films are as funny as the day I saw them (eg young Frankenstein and Animal House), others lose a little with the passage of time. Dr. Strangelove is a "tweener", but in the cold war when I first saw it, it was a perfect satire; especially Sterling Hayden's role, George C. Scott, and of course Peter Sellers. Best of two best lines: "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the war room" (the other being Hayden character lecturing "Mandrake" on the loss of precious body fluids).
