"The Senate will not be holding votes this weekend on reopening the government as was initially expected, as some Republican senators will be attending a high-dollar fundraising retreat for the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) on Georgia’s Sea Island.

The timing of the fundraising committee’s fall meeting is awkward for senators; Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has urged his GOP colleagues not to hold fundraisers during the shutdown because it could open them up to political attacks.
....
Republican senators are usually expected to attend the fundraising weekend, which is an annual NRSC event, but they aren’t required to do so.

This year, however, some Republican senators are nervous about the political optics of hanging out at a posh resort while the government is shut down, and some GOP lawmakers are thinking about changing their plans to skip it entirely, according to sources familiar with the behind-the-scenes hand-wringing."
____
Many Senators are embarrassed by the "optics" of spending a luxury weekend at a $500/night resort (where I actually honeymooned) shmoozing with donors while 750,000 federal employees are furloughed without pay.

They should be.

I agree.

This fundraiser should be cancelled...just like the Democratic get together in the Napa Valley should be cancelled.

I just looked, basic rooms at the main property start at around $1,0000.
It's pretty easy to roll into Sea Island anonymously. Private jet to the airport that is basically down the street, hop into a car with blacked out windows, drive on to the private guarded island. I guess they are worried about leaks? I'm honestly surprised that some are worried about optics.
My kid worked there for years BTW!

Too bad Democrats aren’t swift enough to get ads out like GOPs did in 42 districts.

They will come. I wonder which waiter will "accidentally" record some of the conversations...
I’m not in a purple state or district, so I have to search for political ads out there.
Networks are now afraid to put out the truth, since it’s the opposite of trump social.

Sources like real clear politics and several news radio stations at the top of the hour have swung hard red in what they present & how they slant it.

Disagree.
MAGA republicans should hold an even fancier fund raiser with all of Trump's elitist billionaires.
They can laugh at the poor people as they eat lobster and caviar.

All Congresscritters should be embarrassed to be drawing a paycheck during a government shutdown. Will any be Sufficiently embarrassed to propose legislation to change that ?

Why would republicans be embarrassed? They voted to fund the government.
