GOP Debate Number 7

The debate as far as substance goes was a wash. There wasn't a whole lot of serious discussion in depth about the problems facing this nation. There wasn't one question addressing the debt crisis that I heard. There was next to nothing about jobs and how government hinders growth. There was nothing about how Europe turning into whores lining up to do business with Iran since they will soon have billions to spend thanks to Obama, Kerry and Clinton. I think Carson is the only one who brought up the derogatory effect of the stack of feckless regulations pouring out of this administration and our broken Visa program but nothing was discussed in depth and that is the moderators fault because of the type of questions they asked. What they call debates today sure don't look anything like they did a couple of decades ago and I think what is going on today may be why the Republicans keep picking losers.

Bush had a good night as far as a fluff of a debate goes and I use the word debate in a tongue and cheek way. Rubio and Christie are very good at answering questions without really answering them. Paul had some good answers but he was also very dishonest on his attack at Cruz over his audit the Fed bill.

Personally there wasn't anything gained for the Republicans in general last night. Men repeating their stump speeches line for line is what it amounted to.

Best summary I've seen so far!

I have been leaning Rubio for quite a while. But I really wish he would quit with blaming everything from plantar's warts to gummy sidewalks on Obama's evil hatred of America. It's getting kinda stale.

Someone need to inform him that Obama is not running next go around. Any comment on Obama will get 1/2 the populous clapping and the other half throwing tomatoes at you. With odds like that it's best to avoid it altogether. He is becoming a one trick pony. He's better than that. His adviser's need to do some critical thinking and put him on a better course.

Personally, I am waiting for the candidate with the balls to tell America that, statistically, we would be better off putting more money fighting cancer cells than terror cells.
In a general, maybe. In a primary?

If he is even interested in luring the center/moderate left. Because, believe me, they don't really have the warm fuzzies about Hillary.

Us guys here in the middle are looking for a logical, sensible president. IMO, the closest thing we have to that is Rubio and even he ain't a grand prize.

Gotta consider. Regardless what anyone thinks about Obama, his approval rating is in the high forties bumping 50%. Rubio needs to make nice with those people who approve of Obama if he has any chance of gaining any support from that other half of the public. Just relying on just the President Hater Base to get elected is futile. He's gonna have to come to the fence line sooner or later.

To be honest, most you folks in the middle looking at the GOP are voting Trump. The moderates are his strength.

 to get to the general, you gotta win the primary. Frankly I think he's right and I hope he makes the case as only he can do (he's the best speaker on either side of the aisle) that Obama's policies have been harmful, and that a course-change is needed.

It's hard for me to to wrap my head around the idea that independents, moderates, centrists favoring Trump. The people I know personally who support Trump are Teahadist types. Obama hating right wingers. I don't personally know any center, center left, moderates centrist types who don't actually despise Mr. Trump. They consider him a joke.

Of course, that's in my neck of the woods. May be different by you.

 them's the numbers. Moderate/Liberal Republicans and Moderate/Conservative Democrats.

Don't forget - you don't have to be all that conservative to hate Obama. Wander on up to traditionally Democrat West Virginia and ask around.

You have inspired me to research the topic. Thanks....

Learned some interesting stuff....

First, Trump’s support is not particularly ideological. In recent YouGov polls, 20 percent of his supporters describe themselves as “liberal” or “moderate,” with 65 percent saying they are “conservative” and only 13 percent labeling themselves as “very conservative.” Less than a third of his supporters say they are involved with the Tea Party movement. Their views put them on the right side of the American electorate, but they cover the Republican mainstream. <snip>

In terms of demographics, Trump’s supporters are a bit older, less educated and earn less than the average Republican. Slightly over half are women. About half are between 45 and 64 years of age, with another 34 percent over 65 years old and less than 2 percent younger than 30. One half of his voters have a high school education or less, compared to 19 percent with a college or post-graduate degree. <snip>

Who Are Trump's Supporters? | RealClearPolitics

One way to understand Trump’s longevity is to look more closely at his supporters. Trump’s backers tend to be whiter, slightly older and less educated than the average Republican voter. But perhaps more importantly, his supporters have shown signs of being misinformed. Political science research has shown that the behavior of misinformed citizens is different from those who are uninformed, and this difference may explain Trump’s unusual staying power.

"What he did was, he fired up the crazies," McCain said after Trump held a rally in Phoenix.

The political establishment is flummoxed, and at least one of its members has concluded that Trump's supporters are just insane. <snip>

In fact, I’ve found a single statistically significant variable predicts whether a voter supports Trump—and it’s not race, income or education levels: It’s authoritarianism. <snip>

Trump’s “very best voters are self-identified Republicans who nonetheless are registered as Democrats.”
<snip>

Another mind-boggling conclusion set forth by Cohn is that registered Republicans are “one of Mr. Trump’s weakest groups.” If you can’t wrap your mind around that, well join the club. Perhaps this helps explain why so many Republicans I know don’t care much for Trump as a Presidential candidate. <snip>
