How about don't make people feel like it's their patriotic duty to buy something they don't need and perhaps can't afford? With the "go out and buy something you need a loan to purchase, and you don't need it" attitude, we'll never get out of this economic struggle. People need to be more responsible with their money.
GM and Chrysler received TARP funds. Wasn't the point of that money to prevent jobs from being lost?
More wasted spending from the government.
I am an American. In fact, I live in Michigan, where the auto industry is the predominant industry. While Ford, GM and Chrysler do contribute jobs to the area, so do Toyota, and a number of others. Best check your facts.
It doesn't matter where the money's going if it's going out of someone's pockets. The response was to someone who said that we should buy a foreign car brand and send the profits to a foreign country and thereby cost for American jobs.
Facts are that Toyota may contribute jobs but since Toyota is a foreign company the profits go to a foreign contry. As that keeps up and more and more American jobs go bye bye there will come a time that the countries where companies such as Toyota are from will not have a market in the US to sell to since Americans will be a 2nd world country.
Buy good cars at good prices. Demand quality.Buy Ford, GM, Chrysler and save an American job!!!
Buy good cars at good prices. Demand quality.
If Ford, GM, and Chrysler can show quality, they can compete. If they cannot, then the way to salvage the jobs is for them to fail, so that other companies which will build and deliver quality may rise in their place.
As several companies in a host of industries have already discovered, a commitment to "Buy American" costs jobs; it does not save them.
Given the fact that Toyota is experiencing record amounts of its own red ink this year, the argument that some car manufacturers must fall seems unavoidable. Supporting decrepit companies only delays the inevitable and magnifies the pain and suffering for all concerned.I do not do this often, but I am going to both thank you, and agree with you.
The big problem with the 3 million jobs lost doomsday scenarios is that they assume that no other company will replace failed companies. If both GM and Chrysler go under, people will still buy roughly the same number of cars, meaning Ford, Toyota, Honda, et al will benefit

(BTW, don't thank me too much....I buy Fords! :mrgreen
(I did warn you not to thank me too much!Oh, and Ford...the one company we do not make parts for...
I would love to have a sit down with these unions and say, "if these companies go under you get 100% of nothing, if you help them out and take maybe 60% of your benefits at least your still employed and getting said benefits, WAKE UP". Dealers getting rid of the parts? ebay, or sell to third party auto parts companies/private mechanics.Unions in this case did not help. Autoworker unions became the mafia. Chrysler will not buy back a single part from it's dealers when they close so all inventory is dumped on the owners of the dealerships! How will they get rid of all this?
Right after Chrysler announced that it was closing 700 dealerships, GM now announces that it is closing 1,100 of them.
Want to know what that means? A whole LOT of car salesmen are going to have to look for another line of work. That's just about the last thing we need - More politicians. Yuck!!
Article is here.
Anicdotal second-hand inside scoop: My mother works for NUMMI in Fremont, CA. She tells me that folks making GM cars down there are not worried about loosing their jobs because that plant will be producing all the cars these other plants won't be when they close.
NUMMI isn't GM, but they make GM cars, and the cars are going to be made rather or not GM plants make them.

Is it just me or is Obama only targeting American plants?
NUMMI does final assembly doesn't it? Is GM moving actual final assembly away from UAW plants? That would be a huge hit to the UAW, since most of what GM and Chrysler actually do still in the US is final assembly.
Once Obama Motors takes over, cars will be rolling off the assembly line again.....
If only we were CEO's of these companies, everthing would be okay wouldn't it? Sure.
