Beans and rice: the potatoes and chicken of the vegetarian world.
Personally, not my favorites but I know plenty of people who make some wonderful dishes with both. I make a great dish with spinach (I can find it fresh for $1.49 a bag) and chicken pieces (depending upon what is on sale, I have found them for 99 cents a pound). I have learned to cook a lot more with spinach over the years. Love them in eggs. Farm Fresh around here for $4.49 a dozen.

Eggs Florentine is my favorite breakfast.

I try not to eat a lot of bread, but I do splurge and get myself a loaf of sourdough from a women in my neighborhood and I love that with eggs florentine. I use the sourdough instead of an English muffin. It makes a great breakfast for dinner.

our Govt is a controller of what's allowed and what isn't , right ?
Not really.

In Europe, new food additives are generally presumed unsafe until proved otherwise through scientific review. But the United States allows food companies to self-certify the safety of many chemicals without prior Food and Drug Administration approval. This is because of a regulatory pathway known as GRAS, or “generally recognized as safe.”

interesting ...

Under GRAS, companies are expected, but not required, to notify the F.D.A. when they introduce a new chemical that experts they’ve hired deemed OK to use. As a result, the food industry is often vetting the safety of the ingredients in our food, not federal regulators. Researchers estimate that there are roughly 1,000 chemicals in the food supply whose identities are unknown to regulators. (Mr. Kennedy announced that he’s working to close the GRAS loophole.)

and liberals/Democrats fight this ... unbelievable :(

Liberals are fighting to keep chemicals and additives in food? Where did you read or watch that nonsense?

no, they hate JFK Jr and the efforts that's being made to improve American's health
Some people might hate him for his vaccine stances, his conspiracy theories, his animal cruelty, infidelity, etc.

If you have evidence that liberals hate him because he'd like to take chemicals out of food, please share a link to that. That is what we are discussing.

the Left has been so co-opted that they really need to wear some Corporate Logos on their faces.

and change the 'left' name to something a little more honest too.

If you are in favor of this but disagree with strategies that have been utilized so far, please share proposals of how we, as a society, could implement changes to improve our health through nutrition.
Despite being a country blessed with hundreds of millions of acres of some of the richest topsoil and most agreeable climate conditions for farming on earth, we have some of the most expensive groceries on earth. https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/rankings_by_country.jsp?title=2024&displayColumn=3

In fact, the only countries with more expensive groceries are small island nations, or nations with very little arable land. This is due to our food supply being controlled by just a handful of large conglomerates (thus lacking market competition), and our ag subsidies heavily weighted towards grain and feed production. Ideally, we need to subsidize whole foods and produce more and grains less.

That said, the problem is that many, if not most, Americans are ignorant of what a good diet is and what a healthy lifestyle is. This is one of the reasons there are huge differences in life expectancies between affluent, educated zip codes and poor, uneducated zip codes. For example:

A lot of people believe you must eat organic food to be healthy. This isn't true.

A lot of people believe you have to avoid "gluten" to be healthy. This isn't true.

Some people still believe that dietary cholesterol increases your cholesterol levels when they are actually driven by saturated fat intake and diets high in high glycemic foods.

Most people do not understand what a whole foods diet is, and what it looks like.

Futhermore, as someone that has been a fanatic about my strength training and exercise my whole life, most people have no idea how to properly strength train in the gym, and they don't have any idea how to properly train to improve your cardiovascular performance.

We could improve people's metabolic health dramatically just by showing them how to lift properly (lift heavy, with almost nothing but big compound lifts), train properly (some sort of exercise that get's your heart rate above 150 BPM for 20 minutes or more 2 to 3 days a week with spikes at near 180 BPM or higher), and eat properly - a whole foods diet rich in fruits, vegatables, whole grains, nuts and healthy fats, lean meats and cold water fish (avoiding processed meat entirely).

Of course, even with the education, the real problem is getting them to do it.

I'm generally against government action in this area, save for what is directly harmful.

Excesive sugar, salt, and fat are bad for you, but they're also necessary. Some scientists think the evolution of tastebuds is because of that necessity. Either way, construct your diet accordingly.

Very extensive, informed, and thoughtful analysis. Totally agree with your assessment!

I'd support fast food zoning laws. Only allow so many fast food restaurants to operate in a given area. I'd also support making 'Big Gulps' at convenient stores illegal. Among other things.
