I don't think that is what Nixon finally saw. Nixon concluded that resigning meant that there is something more important than his ego, more important than his standing among his faithful followers. He had a tortured view of what patriotism was, but at least he could envision the abstract concept and understand 'for the good of the country' might have to include personal sacrifice .
