Get Ready for a Vaccine Information War - The New York Times

Social media is already filling up with misinformation about a Covid-19 vaccine, months or years before one even exists.

The other night, midway through watching a clip from “Plandemic” — a documentary that went viral on social media last week, spreading baseless lies and debunked nonsense about the coronavirus to millions of Americans overnight — I had a terrifying thought:

What if we get a Covid-19 vaccine and half the country refuses to take it?

It occurred to me that all the misinformation we’ve seen so far — the false rumors that 5G cellphone towers fuel the coronavirus, that drinking bleach or injecting UV rays can cure it, that Dr. Anthony Fauci is part of an anti-Trump conspiracy — may be just the warm-up act for a much bigger information war when an effective vaccine becomes available to the public. This war could pit public health officials and politicians against an anti-vaccination movement that floods social media with misinformation, conspiracy theories and propaganda aimed at convincing people that the vaccine is a menace rather than a lifesaving, economy-rescuing miracle.

Scariest of all? It could actually work.

I’ve been following the anti-vaccine community on and off for years, watching its members operate in private Facebook groups and Instagram accounts, and have found that they are much more organized and strategic than many of their critics believe. They are savvy media manipulators, effective communicators and experienced at exploiting the weaknesses of social media platforms. (Just one example: Shortly after Facebook and YouTube began taking down copies of “Plandemic” for violating their rules, I saw people in anti-vaccine groups editing it in subtle ways to evade the platforms’ automated enforcement software and reposting it.)

In short, the anti-vaxxers have been practicing for this. And I’m worried that they will be unusually effective in sowing doubts about a Covid-19 vaccine for several reasons.

As for me and my house, we will follow science and the doctors, and we will ignore the confirmation anti-vax virus hoaxers.

If the anti-vaxxers refuse to be vaccinated, there will probable be a few less anti-vaxxers but it won't be the end of the world. While I don't believe in their fears, they have some valid concerns.

They are paranoid because they are a) uninformed and b) tuned into misinformation brokers like Fox so-called News & Alex Jones.

Trump will tout any short-term prospect right up to election to keep people's hopes up. I expect there will be unbelievable pressure from Trump to get something approved for distribution before election day. Penetrating topical, delivered to your door pill, inhalant, whatever.

Pump that juice in your arm, no testing needed. Just do it!!!

This thread...and most of what the NYT comes up with...belongs in the CT forum.

Me? I don't pay much attention to anything from "social media"...unless, of course, it gives me a good laugh.

And to keep China from stealing it and patenting it. They can actually patent it here and not distribute it here, and sue us for patent infringement if we base off our own stolen research. China loves to use our laws against us when it suits them.

China is probably boosting social media to create false expectations.

Cannabis promising in reducing coronavirus infection: Alberta study | Calgary Herald
Cannabis extracts are showing potential in making people more resistant to the novel coronavirus, says an Alberta researcher leading a study.

After sifting through 400 cannabis strains, researchers at the University of Lethbridge are concentrating on about a dozen that show promising results in ensuring less fertile ground for the potentially lethal virus to take root, said biological scientist Dr. Igor Kovalchuk.

Anti-vaxxer whose son contracted measles says she played '''Russian roulette''' with boy'''s health | Fox News

Ally Edward-Lasenby told the radio station “The Hits” she chose to vaccinate one of her children but not her son Cameron, who later contracted the measles and became very ill.

When probed by the radio hosts as to why she made the choice not to vaccinate Cameron, Edward-Lasenby said a “research” paper that claimed there was a link between vaccinations and autism influenced her decision.

The Tyranny of the Stupid is already on in earnest.

New Yahoo News/YouGov coronavirus poll: Almost 1 in 5 say they won't get vaccinated

Asked whether they plan to get vaccinated against COVID-19 if and when a vaccine arrives, a majority of Americans (55 percent) say yes.

The rest — a significant minority — say they won’t get vaccinated (19 percent) or they’re not sure (26 percent).

One in five Americans, that's something like 66,000,000 - - sixty-six million people.

What I am suggesting is, a number like "one in FIVE" suggests MASS HYSTERIA.
If the number of refuseniks was 500 thousand to ONE MILLION, we wouldn't even be having this conversation at all.
Sixty-six million people refusing to accept a vaccine sounds like the McMartin Preschool moral panic in which millions of Americans suddenly were convinced that all childcare centers were conducting ritual satanic sexual abuse.
In other words, a half a million or a million, that's probably to be expected, but sixty six million is BULL**** hysteria.

We are no longer talking about a handful of people who have adverse reactions to vaccines and we are not talking about autistic kids, we are talking about ONE IN FIVE AMERICANS, which means that we haven't got a chance in Hell of ever beating this virus.
One in five is sixty six million people.
Sixty six million people WILL TAKE DOWN ALL OF US WITH THEM.
This is LEMMINGS as they jump off a cliff...it is absolute utter insanity.

A majority of vaccine skeptics plan to refuse a COVID-19 vaccine, a study suggests, and that could be a big problem | FOX 10 Phoenix

More from Fox:

A majority of vaccine skeptics plan to refuse a COVID-19 vaccine, a study suggests, and that could be a big problem

The availability of a vaccine for the novel coronavirus will likely play a key role in determining when Americans can return to life as usual. Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, on April 30 announced that a vaccine could even be available by January 2021.

Whether a vaccine can end this pandemic successfully, however, depends on more than its effectiveness at providing immunity against the virus, or how quickly it can be produced in mass quantities. Americans also must choose to receive the vaccine.

According to someestimates, 50% to 70% of Americans would need to develop immunity to COVID-19 – either naturally, or via a vaccine – in order to thwart the spread of the virus. If these estimates are correct, that could mean that nearly twice as many Americans would need to elect to receive a COVID-19 vaccine than those who currently opt to be vaccinated against seasonal influenza. Just 37% of American adults did so in 2017-2018, even in the midst of a historically severe flu season.

Making matters more complicated is the possibility that people who hold skeptical views about vaccine safety – sometimes referred to as “anti-vaxxers” – will not opt to receive the coronavirus vaccine. According to some estimates, about one-fifth to two-fifths of Americans express reservations about vaccine safety. If most of these individuals forego receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, they could potentially jeopardize the recovery process.
==========================================================
If tens or hundreds of thousands of lives depend on a majority of the population getting vaccinated, ways to make it mandatory should be investigated.

Someday there will be a vaccine for the coronavirus. There will never be a vaccine for stupid.

Anti-vaxxers are dangerous people. Not quite as bad as ISIS, but considering how many lives their disinformation has claimed, they sure are close.

There is a vaccine for stupid, it's called a restricted type ID.
And that's what we will have to begin issuing.
Persons with such an ID won't be allowed to enter any facility which serves at risk population whatsoever, or any federal or state facility, no air, rail or bus travel, no enrollment in the public school system and no employment where they serve or interact with the public in large numbers, which also means no food jobs, no hospitality, no retail, no transport jobs.

JacksinPA is 100% correct.

Restricted Access ID will be in the future for many Americans.

It is the only legal alternative to forced vaccination, which wouldn't hold up in courts. Also, you couldn't restrict non-vaxxers from getting drivers licenses or buying & registering a vehicle, but that might have to be done remotely to avoid personal contact.

I think the vaccine should be added to the list of what kids have to prove to enroll in school.

As for me and my house, we will follow scientists and doctors before the boobs.

There are 7 variations of Coronavirus: MERS, SARS, COVID-19, Coronavirus 229E, NL63, OC43 and HKU1

There is no vaccine for any of them. They've been working on SARS for 17 years.

We can't make reopening dependent on something that may never exist.

JacksinPA is 100% correct.

Restricted Access ID will be in the future for many Americans.

Oh really, you guys are the ones saying IDs are racist. Now that it could serve your purposes, they're not? Hypocritical much? And btw, Jack is almost never correct, except maybe as a sensationalizer.
