Kemp bans cities, counties from mandating masks

Gov. Brian Kemp on Wednesday extended Georgia’s coronavirus restrictions while explicitly banning cities and counties from adopting rules requiring masks or other face coverings, a measure that could bolster the state’s case in a possible legal battle.

Kemp’s executive order — which was set to expire Wednesday evening — still encourages, rather than requires, Georgians to wear masks in public. The governor has called such a requirement “a bridge too far,” and his office has said local mandates are unenforceable. The governor’s coronavirus orders have for months banned local governments from taking more restrictive or lenient steps than the state. But the new set of rules he signed on Wednesday specified for the first time that cities and counties can’t require the use of masks or other face coverings.

I have absolutely no respect for Brain Kemp. He's just like Ron DeSantis (Governor of Florida). They both take their marching orders from Trump. Neither one of them has any backbone at all.

Not a death cult, but thanks for expressing just how desperate you are.

Remember when republicans favored small government and state and local rights?

Yeah, me neither...

Given the depth of ignorance of some in public office, we may be treated to the spectacle of a state banning vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, should one be developed.

I don't know if it's ignorance so much as desperation to get reelected. Basically, 'screw everyone else so long as my votes are safe'. Oh, and 'drop your pants Donnie, I feel a pucker coming on'.

Hi!

As you noted, politicians are often driven by the roar of the greasepaint [Ed.: Orange hair dye?] and smell of the crowd of a re-election campaign to the exclusion of everything else.* When that's coupled with outré beliefs and ideologies, much mischief can occur -- and sometimes does.

* There are notable exceptions. Mr. Joseph Biden, after the death of his son, is offered as an example.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

The 'General Prologue' is a favourite; 'Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote the drochte of March hath perced to the roote..' etc. I love Middle English.

We've a rich, beautiful language. Along with posting a thought on this forum from time to time I write other things, including poetry. Words are my Lego(r) blocks.

So, what phrase would you use to describe the act of sacrificing the lives of Georgia residents for Trump's re-election?

You're right.

Republicans never believed in any of the things they used as excuses to justify the policies sought by their greedy contributors and their racist supporters.

I think the behavior of Kemp and DeSantis goes beyond politics and partisanship. For a leader to sacrifice the lives of their people like this is unconscionable. You'd think that there would be a point in time where even Trump supporters would say, "Enough is enough." That is how we know it's a death cult.

Thanks right wingers, for not taking this pandemic seriously enough.

Equal protection of the laws is in our State Constitutions. That is more serious. Employment is at the will of Either Party in an at-will employment State, for unemployment compensation.

The governor is correct--it is absolutely unenforceable.

The governor is right to take the Swedish approach--encourage such activities as mask wearing, but let the sovereign individual make the choice, not the nanny government.

Sure; let's save money by abolishing our nanny-State wars on crime, drugs, and terror; Individual Choices! The left can be as Serious as the right.

Stolen governor's races have consequences.

To the degree to which it's unenforceable, action should be taken to change the law to make it enforceable. Kemp should be doing that instead of sitting on his thumbs.

but let the sovereign individual make the choice, not the nanny government.

There's also a lot that political officials can do short of forcing people to do things. One of those things is to communicate to the public the importance of wearing masks. And throughout this entire time, Trump and his political supporters have demonstrated a dismissive attitude towards practical steps to diminish the spread of Covid-19. It's nothing but pure idiocy in the service of Trump's ego and personal political interests.

**** that piece of extrement Kemp. Absolute human trash. That creature does not care how many of us die.

How many squads of officers will it take to enforce the wearing of masks?

You don't need to use force for most people. Shame goes a long way. For the people that don't have any shame, and don't care about other human beings, for example, Trump supporters, you can discourage the behavior using fines.

My very favorite jurist, Mr. Justice Brandeis, observed about a century ago that the law will be respected when it is respectable.

That simple wisdom is very relevant to what we discuss here.

I wanted to ask Detective Luce, but he's busy at the moment. Maybe you will take a shot?

What do you see as the legal authority for a law requiring citizens to wear a mask? What part of a constitution, state or federal, empowers the government to tell people to wear a mask?

1. I am unfamiliar with Georgia's laws, but I know they can be changed. This situation is serious enough that we should modify our laws to account for the pandemic. We don't have to sit around and just watch people die unnecessarily. We can change to meet the challenges of the present.

2. Speaking of respect, there are few things more respectable than wearing a cloth mask to reduce the likelihood that you will transmit Covid-19 to your fellow citizens, therefore reducing the risk they will die.

3. Public information campaigns can go a long way, but they require people in positions of authority, such as Kemp, to accept the science behind respirators, and to put the interests of his residents above the interests of Trump.

I thought it wasn't possible, but the Republican Party is actually getting stupider.

My god.
