Openly gay teen voted prom queen at LA high school - Yahoo! News

An openly gay teen has been voted prom queen at his Los Angeles high school in a campaign that began as a stunt but ended up spurring discussion on the campus about gender roles and popularity.

Sergio Garcia said he felt "invincible" when he was crowned queen of the Fairfax High School dance at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Saturday.

Days before the dance, Garcia told fellow students that he was "not your typical prom queen candidate. There's more to me than meets the eye."

He also promised that he would be wearing a suit on prom night, but "don't be fooled: Deep down, I am a queen."

In so many ways, they are so much better than us.

I think it is a lot fun.

I think his attention whoring unfairly barred some pretty young lady from being a real prom queen. I think that that his sorry attempt at being a tragic statement cost a real prom queen her chance and cost him what measure of masculinity he may have had left.

I don't care one way or the other if a school votes in a gay guy as a prom queen, although I do feel some sympathy for whomever the prom king is. :)

I have little knowledge of how a prom queen is elected.

Who votes for the queen?

What are the queens duties?

At what age does the coronation party occur?

students vote for the queen and king of prom.

I personally don't know if there are any duties other than to stand there for photos, wear a crown, and dance with the king. I've never been voted for prom king(or queen) myself.

As far as ages, most schools will break up proms by classes(so there will be junior proms and senior proms, etc...) and each class has their king and queen. But for general purposes, 17-18 years old.

He may be the queens lover. That's cool.

Maybe, if that were the case. The article didn't say, so I'm assuming its kind of like most proms, and the people elected aren't necessarily a couple.

If he was democratically elected I dont see any problem, in fact I applaud the teachers and parents for producing young adults with a social attitude of this caliber.

No, I just don't think it is an appropriate battleground. I think that even if he is gay, he's still a boy and perfectly qualified to be the prom king. Making himself the prom queen makes him a feminine caricature of gay.

Some one that enlightened about this stuff gender roles and all was RuPaul. I knew him before he was famous. Turns out he was one hell of drag queen and a very honest person sincere in his beliefs. When Kurt Cobain put on a dress it was BS when RuPaul did it it had honesty.

This kid isn't even wearing a dress, per the article. The issue here isn't even gender and if it was, I would have a much different attitude about it. The issue is orientation, which isn't even really an issue except that the kid is being called prom queen when he was perfectly eligible to be prom king like every other boy student.

It's ridiculous.

I should have read the article:3oops:

If it is a stunt I do not support it. But stunts are fun:confused:

Yeah, stunts are fun. I agree. And I am sure from the inside, this stunt is probably just a fun thing, too.

What I get upset about with other gay people is that they want to be treated like everyone else....until they don't want to be treated like everyone else.

I see Jallmans point. At first I thought who cares, more power to them and all that- but he does make a good point about this situation and orientation.

It is a tough situation. One time in New Orleans when staying with my gay uncle he had a party. This one young man developed a crush on me. I told him I was straight several times at the party. We all went out to a gay bar he would not get off my ass. I finally did a nuclear F bomb on him and my uncles boyfriend is doing double clicks saying "I was wondering how long that would take."

why our conversation reminded of this story I'm not really sure but it did. BTW my uncle's boyfriend is GQ model quality and one of the best friends one could ever have.

I could see a problem if this were some kind of silly legal battle, but the students decided it on their own. If they want a male prom queen, then that is what they should get.

This is just kids being kids, I say let them have at it.

If this is any indication, from the article:
Unique Payne, 17, said she voted for Garcia because she supported the gay community.
Then I totally agree! How can someone name their child Unique Payne? Perhaps how is the wrong question, WHY?

I completely agree. There are bigger issues for people to harp on... such as people who name their child Unique Payne.

I think it is fantastic. A total blurring of the gender lines. It is great. I am all for it. If he is TG it makes it all that much better. The youth of America see things so much more clearly. Big thumbs up on this.

I don't know if I want total blurring but the world is changing and as long as the rights of others are not violated I see no harm. Long live the QUEEN!!!:2wave:

That is sorta true. The kids did decide on it and it seems they have no problem with it.
