Gay “Marriage” Is 10 Years Old—And Christian Leaders Are to Blame

AI Overview

The first recorded instance of marriage can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia around 2350 BC. These early marriages were primarily contractual agreements between families, aimed at building alliances, securing inheritance, and promoting social stability. While love and religion were not central to these early unions, the practice of marriage as a social institution gradually spread to other ancient civilizations like the Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans, according to The Week.

Reinforces what I'm saying, really.

Hey gay folks/parents of gay kids who voted fir Trump/Republicans.

You screwed yourselves.

There are parents of gay kids who literally hate their own kids, or at least 'hate the way they turned out'. It's one of the cruelest things I've observed.

Citing New Testament? That kind of proves my point in the sense that the New Testament reflects a shift in how marriage is viewed by monotheistic Abrahamic religion. In the OT, there's polygyny, and there's really no mention of marriage being some sort of monogamous religious sacrament, which is kind of what it turns into in the NT.

Marriage itself was strictly a legal and political contract in early times. It didn't really evolve into what we understand it as today until much later.
So you prefer OT?

Ezekiel 16:8

8“ When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine.

That passage has absolutely nothing to do with marriage or even a covenant between a man and a woman.

Maybe stop quoting scripture you've never really read and certainly do not understand.

That is actually one of the biggest problems with organized religion, actually - ministers and their flock quoting a book and having absolutely no idea what it means. And then forcing the rest of us to put up with their ignorant, bigoted shit based on their baseless interpretations.

What?

Read slower

"entered into a covenant with you"

All this thread confirms is that certain takes on Christianity become a license for bigotry and mysogany.

And speaking of Christianity, the only reason we are having this discussion was the sheer idiocy of social conservatism to have government get into the business of personal relationships by which there is no Constitutional grounds for the government to be involved.

Gotta remember many if not most early “marriages” were simply a man forcing a women to be subservient to him. The woman had no input.
Eh, not in Egypt. Women had rights in ancient Egypt that wouldn't be seen again for millennia. A woman could divorce her husband, own property, own a business, leave a will, serve in the clergy, etc. Marriage was complete when the man showed up at the woman's house with his belongings and the woman accepted.

Egyptian culture was certainly male dominated, but women had rights unheard of in that part of the world at that time.

Oh why stop there @VySky

Why not continue with the chapter - don’t like the rest?

Neither shall my heart be pitying, nor shall I have mercy, saith the Lord God, for I will cause thy ways to fall upon thine own head, and I will judge thee as thou hast judged, and will set before thee your detestable things

The chapter is a gigantic warning about hoarding the fruits, about thinking oneself superior or righteous, about judging others.

But hey…Cherry pick sections to support castigating and ostracizing others and thinking oneself and one’s beliefs superior to another.

😂

Some Christians will never get the message. 🤷‍♀️ A story as old as the freaking Bible and Christianity itself, no?

God did not invent marriage. Marriage wasn't even a sacrament until the Middle Ages.
Even then, it was more ceremonial among nobility or royalty.

Doubly so if the parents abuse and/or disown their kids because of it.

First piece I have read where the finger is pointed at Christian leaders.

Interesting read.

Why does anyone care if gays and lesbians marry the ones they love?

I oppose allowing biological males to compete with biological females in sports because it hurts the females. But allowing homosexuals to marry doesn’t hurt anybody.

The real stupid is that the arrogant **** thinks he knows what a god wants marriage to be because he cites the writings of bedouin tribes in ancient Palestine.

Probably ate shellfish and wore clothing made of two different fabrics while writing it.
Doesn’t the Bible advocate for the execution of adulterers by stoning? Not sure if that’s the book I want to be basing our laws on.

Same book that gave "justice" to a rape victim by forcing her assailant to marry her.

"BUH BUH BUH DAT'S OLD TESTAMENT! WE GOT A KOVENANT WIT JEEBUS NOW!"

Yeah, until it becomes convenient to quote the OT again when justifying stupidity.

Whats interesting is, when SSM was being debated opponents claimed it would harm families, "traditional" marriage, or even society. Yet after 10 years, there has been nothing from having SSM to substantiate any of those claims. It was all ignorance and fear mongering, which is all that opponents to SSM ever really had.
