Gay “Marriage” Is 10 Years Old—And Christian Leaders Are to Blame

Christians should just say "whatever." Not a big deal. Call it marriage if you want and penetrate each other with whatever you want, to your heart's desire.
Christians should say nothing, because they have no right to judge.

The whole op-ed is fundamentalist claptrap.

Other than "interesting read," you have no opinion of it?

Agreed. Pretty much every culture on earth has a version of "marriage" (formalized long-term commitment of a couple..or more...to each other) and most of those have nothing to do with god, esp. the Christian God.

At least most gay marriages don’t wind up with the guy cheating on his wife right after she gives birth.

Nor with the guy divorcing 2 wives to marry younger women.

See, THAT kind of thing - “Christians” are totally ok with that. Adultery, divorce…they will even line up behind and bow in subservience to liars, cheaters, adulterers -

But gay marriage?

That’s the REAL problem.

😂🙄

One of the most ridiculous religious myths.
There's a theological purpose to the story. It originated, or at least traced back to, Mesopotamia and found its way into the "foundation" of many religions.

God didn't invent marriage. There's no evidence such a tradition existed before writing and written law were invented.
Wild ass guess here, there was religion before there was writing and written law.

Hey gay folks/parents of gay kids who voted fir Trump/Republicans.

You screwed yourselves.

Where’s the wife who is cheated on?

They’re both men duh…..

Likely so, and there were probably some understood rules about mate selection, but marriage was likely developed after people began living in larger, more complex populations. It was a way to ensure that wealth and power remained in the families that possessed it.

Depends. Catholicism is not OK with it. It does happen, but it is not OK.

Gotta remember many if not most early “marriages” were simply a man forcing a women to be subservient to him. The woman had no input.

That’s exactly how marriage developed - property and inheritance and money.

🤷‍♀️

Churches got involved because they have always wanted to be involved where the money and power is. And have control over societies.

Jesus had a problem with that aspect of churches when HE was alive. But, those who claim to follow him always tend to conveniently forget that message.

AI Overview

The first recorded instance of marriage can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia around 2350 BC. These early marriages were primarily contractual agreements between families, aimed at building alliances, securing inheritance, and promoting social stability. While love and religion were not central to these early unions, the practice of marriage as a social institution gradually spread to other ancient civilizations like the Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans, according to The Week.

Citing New Testament? That kind of proves my point in the sense that the New Testament reflects a shift in how marriage is viewed by monotheistic Abrahamic religion. In the OT, there's polygyny, and there's really no mention of marriage being some sort of monogamous religious sacrament, which is kind of what it turns into in the NT.

Marriage itself was strictly a legal and political contract in early times. It didn't really evolve into what we understand it as today until much later.
