It's hard to know what the "best bet" is, unless one considers the current president an example of a "best bet" which he wasn't when he first ran and had the GOP fighting against him being the GOP candidate. We're probably in the "who can swim upstream the best" stage of presidential candidate selections.
No one thought Trump would sell outside of the northeast nor did they think he would appeal to evangelical voters, but such is the power of branding. Newsom or any other candidate can try and run some variation of this by channeling grievance politics. I'm not a fan of it because it's politically corrosive, but we're on a downward trajectory so it's more a question of how fast we want to get to the bottom.
