In response to Harry Truman's move to end segregation in the late 1940's, Strom Thurmond led the charge as Southern Democrats left the Party to form the State's Rights Party, aptly named the Dixiecrats.
“[T]here’s not enough troops in the Army to force the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the nigger race into our theatres, into our swimming pools, into our homes, and into our churches,” he said as in his first speech as the party’s presumptive president. It was the first toss in a game that would see virtually the entire South migrated to the GOP.

The GOP has ridden that racial divide for decades. The Southern Strategy won Nixon the White House, and it lifted Reagan there as well. Bush sort of rode that carpet as well. But the country had changed from Strom's day.

When Trent Lott tried to ratchet the Southern Strategy up a notch by being overt, he cut his own throat. And, that's not a bad thing.

When then-Senator Trent Lott said in 2002 that “all of these problems” would have been avoided had Thurmond gotten his way, Republicans pushed him out as Senate leader. The popularity of Condi Rice and Herman Cain show that there is at least some room in the party for minorities. Still, these are instances of minor progress within a sad overall record on race.

The GOP needs to shed its racist identity. It really can't be taken serious again until then.

Remind me which party officially holds that blacks aren't smart enough to get into colleges without affirmative action.
Remind me which party refuses to hold blacks to the same standards whites and Asians are held to?

I don't know that I've ever seen anyone so hung up on race, on any other political forum. Wow.

You really don't understand why affirmative action came to be. Do you?

It's a remedy for systemic racism not, as you argue, a crutch for people Democrats think are not smart enough to compete. Whatever made you think that?

In many cases, those who whine about "racism" the most are racists. Just like some of the biggest male gay bashers bash gays while posting attired in a bustier and a chiffon mini!

You won't do very well pretending to claim what i DON'T KNOW. Affirmative action is a system that punishes innocent whites and Asians with better grades for racism perpetrated on people who are long dead. It also punishes the recipients by tainting those of the "beneficiary group" who actually made it on merit and it also causes many recipients to find out they cannot hack it when they go to a working environment where AA is no longer applicable

Well, when someone tell me Strom Thurmond left the Democratic Party because he thought it was too racist and that Strom joined the Republicans in order to champion racial harmony, I gather there's a need to make a thread.

So you're saying that Blacks have the same circumstances K-12 as Whites and Asians.
Remind me which party officially holds that blacks aren't smart enough to get into colleges without affirmative action.
This is the first time I have ever heard someone say that DEMs said Blacks are not smart enough to get into college.
Remind me which party refuses to hold blacks to the same standards whites and Asians are held to?
Let me know when the factors that lead into the standards are the same .

Well, frankly, I was referring to many of the threads that you start, and not this one specifically. It doesn't really matter to me either way, as race is not an issue for me. I tend to judge based on character rather than color.

So now you are both directly/indirectly calling another poster a racist.
No favoritism to the fright-wing around here .

If the Bedsheets fit!! but its true, those who whine the most about racism are often closet cases. Their accusations are a specious attempt to exorcise their own proclivities

I'm not calling anyone a racist. I'm calling them "hung-up". There's a distinct difference.

I expect that you'll be just as conscientious when it comes to posters who bash the POTUS with multuple threads every day, with the usual dp name-calling, who bash Mexican Americans on a regular/racist basis, and who bash the poor for just being--poor.

And Heaven help the one who tries to be a moderate on guns .

AA is there because whites still resist hiring blacks, preferring to hire whites.
Black Unemployment: Expert: Black Unemployment Compounded By White Favoritism During Hiring | News One

Nancy DiTomaso, a professor and vice dean for faculty and research and professor of management and global business at Rutgers Business School of Newark and New Brunswick and author, says that equality in the workplace is often obstructed by Whites’ favoritism for other Whites during the hiring process — even by those who claim to support equal opportunities.

Good old GOP talking maneuver--call the other side what you are .

Well, if you need God's help, then It is the one to talk to about it. Not me.

But don't address the crux of my post, those on the team you support who bash Obama, Mexican-Americans, and the poor .

These are racial stereotypes.
duh, if you hire a white or Asian guy you can pretty much assume his degree was earned.
and far less chance of a criminal record
Good thing today's public school teachers aren't like this, since they can't choose their students .

stereotypes can be accurate

black males about 6% of the US population >50% of the murderers.

I don't have a team. I have opinions, and those opinions fall wherever they may, and whomever agrees with my views just happens to agree. I'm not in a dogfight with anyone. If it's difficult for you to comprehend that it's not an *us* vs. *them* world, then that is something that you have to deal with yourself. My (or anyone else's) validation isn't necessary for making someone else's views legitimate.

The first turn-over from DEM to GOP began in the 1920's with the Southern Conservative KKK's.
Include Indiana in the old Confederacy, since they have voted with the South since the unCivil War.
Good thing the KKK's helped adopt Prohibition huh, ingraining the MOB in our Nation .
