So I've flown many times in the past but I let the date for Star (Real) ID sneak up on me. I do not have my passport because, in all honesty, I've never had need of one (I don't travel outside of the US).

In any case, the problem with either the Star ID or passport is that you need your birth certificate and therein lies the rub: I live in Alabama but was born in NY, and the only way other than traveling to NY in person to get a copy is to go through VitalChek.

Which I did. Processing time for birth certificate? 140-200 days. So while I did start the process before the date of the swap over to the Star ID, I have no clue when I will see that birth certificate. Right now the expected delivery is in October. Yeesh.

So has anyone flown without these two forms of ID? If so, what was your experience? I've seen what might be expected, but that information is all around the the date of swapping over (May 7). I assume it's the same. I'm just wondering what records to bring to help the process.

Anyone done it?

I read that there's a bit of a grace period. You can fly but are subject to additional screening at the airport.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Tuesday told lawmakers what will happen when passengers present their ID to a TSA officer.

"If it's not compliant, they may be diverted to a different line, have an extra step, but people will be allowed to fly," Noem told a House Appropriations subcommittee. "We will make sure that it is as seamless as possible and that travelers will get to stay on their intended itinerary, but we are telling people that this law will be enforced."

You can also contact the hospital and/or county of your birth directly for an official copy of your birth certificate.

IIRC when I needed an official raised seal version of my birth certificate I had to to the Dept of Health offices in lower Manhattan even though I was born in Queens County.

Huge pain in the butt but that's how NYC rolls.

But, but, it's so easy to get the documentation for ID.

This "fastest" method is the one that is going to take 140-200 days.

OK. So you can also order it from the NYC Dept of Health and it listed NY counties...the boroughs are counties. Contact the counties directly, their Dept of Health is the place to do so.

Do both, whatever. Both can respond faster, you dont know. Dont know how much either costs either. I've been told that you can also pay extra to expedite the process 🤷 Really depends on your need I guess.

I was born in PA and have a Georgia starred drivers license. I cannot obtain an Idaho starred license without my birth Certificate. I applied for one online/via phone with Pennsylvania's Department of Health, Bureau of Health Statistics and Registries, Division of Vital Records. After proving I'm who I say I am, and paying a $30.00 fee, I had a certified birth certificate delivered to me within one month. Don't know if this will help, but I hope it does. My next option would be to consult an attorney to see if there's any other way to expedite this process. Best of luck to you!

You sure you need your birth certificate for the star ID? Maybe if you just tell the state you lost your license, they'll reissue one with the star? I know in CO I didn't have to show my birth certificate - I was just given the star one when my previous license expired.

Same for me.

I didn't ask for it, but I got the Real ID last year when I renewed my license.

Yeah, I was wondering why it would take so long to get a birth certificate. I think I got mine in like 2 weeks when I got married, but I went to the city/county in which I was born. It was mailed.

Mine does not expire until 8/26/27, issued in 2023.

With my apologies to folk up against the wall on this!

But sheesh...it is not like this cutoff date snuck up on anyone.

The Real ID law was enacted in 2005 and folks have had since then to secure the documentation they would need.

Brother I'm sorry to say this...

But Real ID was passed in 2005.

Are you in the northeast and a day trip is possible? If not. Then of course that's not possible and you will have to order it.

My VA Driver's License dosen't have Real ID, but I'll probably get it next renewal. Right now I have my Military Retiree ID, a Passport Book, and the Passport Card.

Of course I also signed up for TSA Precheck and Global Entry as the missus and I hope to travel more after we are both retired.d

Yeah, I've been putting off flying (tough in my line of work) until the birth certificate comes in, but I have to fly on 7/15 so I'm going to have to risk it. I will go very early but my flight is 5 AM so not sure how early :).

Yep. I had no idea I would be getting it, lol.

But is that for renewing, or when you first get your license?
No, that is for the Star ID. If I get a replacement, it will not be Star. In order to get that, birth certificate is required.

Huh. Well that sucks.

Now you see why Voter ID is such an issue.

DEMs don't want it because it suppresses the vote.

MAGAs want it because it suppresses the vote.

(Before anyone makes an assumption, I've supported Voter ID for decades, but before Voter ID can be implemented there is a governmental responsibility that to get them issued.

Of course I think that the whole 1700's "voter registration" system should be scrapped. But this me.)

Different states have handled it differently. When I lived in PA, the state was running up against the deadline for implementation, which is probably the reason the feds have had to keep pushing the dates back. I can understand how someone just assumes the state will handle the mandate and it'll be taken care of the next time they need to renew their license.

When I moved to VA, I didn't get a real ID the first time, but I got it when I had to get my license updated due to an address change.
