Florida teacher investigated by state for showing Disney cartoon movie in class

You bet it was overreach. This shit ain't American and Americans ain't gonna stand for it. The few snowflakes who use their school kids to push this shit have some place to go - Russia. Putin is building villages for their candy asses. They can take themselves and their Jesus to where they belong.
Americans stand for plenty like a corrupted FBI, and a nincompoop president.
Parents are largely supportive of getting this junk out of school and classrooms. Younkin ran on it to win VA
and DeSantis ran ( to lessor extent) with his 20 point re-election

The law is popular, the law is sensible, but like all laws run by a supervisory bureaucracy implementation
means curbing excesses. Hopefully that will happen. In the meantime kids can do without graphic sexual descriptions like oral sex with other kids watching in books. Our kids scores are decline vs the rest of the world -stick to fundamentals

I heard there was an LGBT character in the movie. PROOF the left will FORCE all of your children to gay marry!

We must abolish state education immediately!

It's nice that you think that, but she does and she should know that. I certainly took home my share of permission slips for movies growing up.

The policy applies to any movie that's not G rated. It's pretty standard in lots of school districts across the US.
Puritanical nonsense and is that the specific policy of this school/school district? We all know no parent would have objected if none of characters were gay. Even if it was policy should be revised, especially for films related to class, however loosely, and the sexuality of the characters should have no bearing on that. They are plenty old enough to be able to grasp a PG rated movie especially by US standards and if not there is a teacher perfectly capable of providing the "parental guidance" role. When I was in elementary school we watched Monsieur Lazhar in French class, that movie is rated PG in Ontario (G in Quebec) and has a scene of a teacher committing suicide by hanging, now that might need some parental guidance, not a ****ing Disney movie. By high school we were watching very hard R films in English class including as part of presentations and no permission slips in sight.

Check this out!

Everyone should watch this. HOLY CATS--I want ALL the children in the whole country to have THIS teacher. She's FRICKING amazing, and RIGHT. The state is going to traumatize those kids--especially the ones who confessed they had feelings of belonging to the LGBTQ community themselves. Talk about stat-sponsored child abuse.

What does being gay have to do with earth science?
the other part is appropriate subject matter in the classroom One is not supposed to put in extraneous charcters/subjects

This is the film description: tell me how this fits into a geography class? I dont see it
Disney’s Strange World, released last fall, depicts a group of explorers who go searching for an exotic plant that serves as their society’s main source of energy.

The main character, Ethan Clade, is gay and develops a crush on another male character.

The expansion will prohibit discussions of sexual orientation or gender identity, except in rare circumstances, in all K-12 schools in Florida.
The rule approved by the board on Wednesday was proposed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year.

It governs “professional conduct” by teachers, prohibiting instructors in grades 4-12 from “intentionally provid[ing] classroom instruction” on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Teachers found in violation of the rule could face suspension or even have their teaching licenses revoked.

The rule has an exception, in which teachers may broach LGBTQ content only if it is in line with state curriculum or is part of a reproductive health course — provided that parents who might object to such content have the chance to “opt-out” of the lessons beforehand.

Under the existing “Don’t Say Gay” law, which DeSantis signed into effect last year, teachers in grades K-3 are already prohibited from providing instruction on LGBTQ-related issues, and are required to keep parents informed of any changes to or decisions related to a student’s mental, emotional, or physical health or well-being.

Proponents of the expansion argue that parents have the right to determine whether and when their children learn about potentially sensitive topics, and should not have to worry that their children may be receiving instruction on, or being exposed to, topics that they believe are age-inappropriate.

You bet. We elected Biden in a landslide

No. Parents don't want bigotry training for their kids in school.

That's not happening and you know it
Our kids scores are decline vs the rest of the world -stick to fundamentals
The fundamentals are a safe and respectful environment for all at school

Conspiracy garbage
I wish
You bet. We elected Biden in a landslide
the landslide is your standard of living tumbling down the hill
No. Parents don't want bigotry training for their kids in school.
you should familiarize yourself wit the law. It's designed to be moot on LGBQwhatever matters
It doesn't promote or defend such lifestyles it simply says not in the classroom
That's not happening and you know it
I gave an example of a book earlier where that was the theme
The fundamentals are a safe and respectful environment for all at school
respect each other, but keep the focus on learning appropriate subject matter

The mere existence of gay person in media or otherwise is not “providing instruction” or having a “discussion” of sexual orientation.

Conspiracy garbage

This one is a lost cause. Too much indoctrination and not enough education. Otherwise, I agree! :) :)

its the subject of the film shown in class. Presumably the film was shown as part of earth science cirriculum
( although it beats the hell out of me how a gay alien in search of energy sources fits into an earth science class)

The law also prohibit inappropriate subject matter inserted into different curriculum
Teachers have to stick to subject material and not introduce other spurious concepts

So it's either inappropriate in that it's not related to earth sciences, or if the film is related to the class it's prohibited LGBTetc
matter

I just want to reiterate. If they believe children seeing a movie that has an openly gay person is inappropriate, then they also believe children seeing a gay person (or any openly queer person) in public is inappropriate. Logically they MUST believe that.

The goal is the elimination of "degenerate" behavior from public life. They want being queer to be treated like hardcore fetishes. They don't want queer people to exist at all, and if they do exist they want them removed and ostracized.

Indeed. The "problem" here is simply that people are openly gay. This is an attempt to criminalize gayness.

man im glad i actually got an education and not the drivel passing for such
The proof is todays "educators" have failed the kids

Did you watch her Tik Tok video? It's even way worse than we think--aside from the atrociousness of criminalizing gayness, they've added state-sponsored child abuse by having state investigators interrogating the children one-by-one, some of whom have confessed to identifying as LGBTQ!

Can you imagine--a state investigator grilling you about how you felt watching a gay cartoon character--when you're just beginning to have those feelings? It's....evil.

The extraneous (incidental) subject matter isn't a problem until someone tries to criminalize it.

Gay people exist, so depicting them in fiction shouldn't in and of itself be a problem.

We're trying to enact our own little dystopian police state right here in 2023.

Down to and including literal thought police.

So, do you think the focus on criminalizing gayness is going to help increase education standards somehow rather than be a major distraction?

I mean if you read literally any actual synopsis of the movie you would be able to vaguely relate it to Earth Sciences:
Walt Disney Animation Studios' original action-packed adventure "Strange World" introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures. The voice cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Dennis Quaid as Searcher's larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher's 16-year-old son, Ethan, who longs for adventure; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher's partner in all things; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia's fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange world.
It is about explorers discovering their world and how it works through interconnected systems, akin to Earth Sciences. Also notice the lack of the mention of one of the characters sexual orientation because it is not a central point of the movie. The only way you could make this out to be a discussion about sexual orientation is if you view the mere existence of a homosexual character to be a discussion.

This is just pure pearl clutching.

this is a pure science course class turned fictional . On that basis alone it is a waste of time. unless you are a Disney Imagineer
Kids can get science fiction anywhere, their learning time is limited. This has no scientific value

This is just pure pearl clutching.
It's concerns from age inappropriate student exposure upto teachers with political narratives using the classroom to
push their political agenda
. Which is why the law is so strict - to insure uniform compliance of the educational system to gives kids equal quality education.

But I disagree with the draconian banning of LGBTQ into the classroom -which is how this action looks
There needs to be some incidental carve out policy for simply using LGBTQ as part of instruction.

DeSantis isn't fooling around on delivering a student leaving high school with good basics.
Florida schools used to be awful, but a lot of money and reform has upped their performance metrics

nobody is trying to criminalize anything

nobody is trying to criminalize anything

There's an open investigation into a teacher airing a film that had one gay character in it. So, yes, someone is indeed trying to criminalize gayness.

At the very least we're seeing some thought policing.

Disney's not moving. The infrastructure of the Disney empire and the attractions in Florida and around the Disney parks are too expansive to pick up and move because they are being held to stricter standards regarding children and inappropriate sexual content.
That is your assessment but fact is that Disney is attacked on al levels in Florida at the moment. The cost for defending themselves might ultimatly be assest to exceed the cost for moving.... Disney is not a political movement but a company driven by profit. Everything is doable:

Then why did Florida make a law criminalizing LGBTQ discussion or instruction in school then?
There could be lawsuits and disciplinary action against teachers, but not criminal charges as I understand it
