Florida Republicans Pass Bill Allowing Trans Kids to Be Removed From Their Families
This is just the latest anti-trans bill passed in the state, but it’s among the most dangerous.
Florida’s House of Representatives passed a bill Wednesday that would let the state take transgender minors away from their families if they are receiving gender-affirming care.
The measure passed by a vote of 82-31. A previous version of the bill passed the Senate earlier this month by a vote of 27-12, and the amended version now goes back to the other chamber for a final vote. Governor Ron DeSantis has previously expressed support for the bill and will likely sign it into law if it passes.
If it becomes law, the bill will allow the state to take custody of the child if they have been “subjected to or is threatened with being subjected to” gender-affirming care, which includes puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy. Florida courts could modify custody agreements from a different state if the minor is likely to receive gender-affirming care in that second state. The text refers to gender-affirming care as “sex-reassignment prescriptions or procedures” and qualifies this care as a form of “physical harm.”...

I posted a thread about this bill when it was first introduced. There was some doubt back then that it would pass, or if it did pass that it would be instantly overturned. Well, here we are. When DeSantis signs this bill into law (and he certainly will) Florida is basically impossible to even visit for transgender children or parents. It allows the state to take custody of a child even if they are "at risk" of receiving gender affirming care. One of the stated "risks" is if either parent/guardian is trans even if the child is not.
Honestly I feel sick. There are thousands of transgender kids in FL. If their families are supportive they can try to flee the state or try to hide that they are trans. If there are trans parents/guardians who have kids or have adopted kids the state will take their kids into custody as well, and they also need to flee.
How long in the age of social media and mass surveillance until the state starts spying on kids/parents to try to find transgender kids? My partner is nonbinary. How long until they are considered "mentally ill" and forcibly "institutionalized" by the state? Despite my fears about where these laws were heading...I'd hoped I was wrong and it would never come to this...
