Florida OKs school materials aimed at making students conservatives


She wants the state curriculum to conform to her religous beliefs and that is insane.
 

Or all kids and teachers and parents, families deserve to be treated with respect, not marginalized simply because they are only a certain small percentage of the population.

And oh my god, that woman is a nutjob. She is so full of shit. In order for children to become successful, they have to be mentally and emotionally healthy too. Children cannot pass if they have mental health issues. Most of those adults have mental health problems that they hide. She is awful.
 
She is projecting. I want my children to be actually prepared as adults, not hiding their problems, indoctrinated into someone's religion because she is too set in her beliefs to understand empathy and the importance of mental and emotional health on learning. She talks about morality as if people don't gain morals until adulthood or they can't get morals from anywhere but a religion, church.

I'm a caring, concerned mother in NC. I care about all students, not just my own kids.

Sexuality and gender identity aren't "options". They are part of who everyone is.

You're absolutely right. They are not "options". You are born with them for life.
There are only two sexes and you don't get to choose which one you are.
Four or five percent of the population should not be dictating what the other 95 percent should be focused on.
And it is the parents' responsibility to deal with a child's confusion over who that child should be - not teachers looking for something else to do because focusing on educating children on the basics - reading, writing, arithmetic.

If 5% of people are LGBTQ then roughly 1 in 20 people are LGBTQ and so that would include a number of students at most schools. You would rather censor reality and keep those kids in the dark, so they may not understand themselves or the other kids around them?

That is not the job of a teacher. It is a parent's responsibility.

I guess that means if a concerned mother states her child is a child of God and God says a man is a man and a woman is a woman is a woman, she should be smacked down for her religious beliefs.

Sex and gender are not the same thing. And sex includes intersex.

Four or five percent of the population are not dictating anything to the rest. You seem to ignore the allies, which outnumber those who are bigoted against LGBTQ+ people.

Parents don't always do a good job at teaching things like that, and being bullied or harassed at school can have a huge impact on mental health. Funny how the best school systems in the world have figured it out, yet you all want to deny this. Until a school shooting, then you bring it up as if you care "it's a mental health problem".
 
It's the responsibility of the teachers to be concerned about others harassing, teasing students about their sexuality or gender identity. To be concerned about what may be keeping a student from doing their best in school, such as anxiety or problems at home due to their sexuality or gender identity.

I would be the first to know. It's those who are poor parents who wouldn't know, and then that can cause issues as listed above, with learning.

Personally, I think bigotry should be kept at home and never exposed in public. Obviously, your correspondent feels otherwise.
 
I didn’t say the teacher was responsible.

But that woman in your video sounds like a bad parent. She’s talking about keeping children in the dark because they can’t handle things. Actually you need to let your children explore on their own. You need to prepare them to deal with what they may encounter.

Learning about things like evolution and the history of the civil rights movement is education. They’re only “political” insofar as right wing nut jobs decide to pit themselves against reality.

A Liberal from California stating children should explore on their own. We're talking about children in schools subject to whatever a teacher wants to teach them.
That's like saying tourists to California shouldn't pay attention to homeless on the streets; defecating in public; and smash and grab thugs marauding through city streets.
They need to deal with what they may encounter.

It’s funny how the only people who I ever seem to hear complain about all the homeless in California are people who don’t even live here.

Of course, as all good parents know, you have to give your child a space to learn on their own. If they can’t solve their own problems, they’ll remain dependent.
 
I lived in San Jose for 20 years and visited S.F. frequently. Now, we don't want to go near that evolving shithole city that is being ruined by incompetent politicians.

Regarding that outspoken mother in that video, I resonate with her opinion of the 4 or 5 percent of self-proclaimed LBGTQ citizens who somehow think the rest of the country should accept teachers/administrators in schools dealing with children confused about their sexual identity. The parents should have the final word as to whether teachers should be talking to children about those sensitive subjects.
 
Lol San Jose is ****ing beautiful. The worst two things about it are traffic and housing prices. Basically, too many people want to live there. Sure, you can find some homeless folks downtown, just like in any other major city.

It’s not the 4-5% of LGBTQ folks “forcing” anything, it’s all kinds of people who are trying to prepare children so they can understand the world around them. Arguing that nobody should be allowed to say “gay” around high school students is ****ing insane. What if the teacher is gay? They’re not allowed to mention that? Or if a teacher is straight, but married, are they not allowed to talk about that? Insane!

Why aren’t parents confident enough about their own views? Do they really think their point of view is so weak that even mentioning homosexuality will be unrecoverable or something?

Nor is it "right wing". Some small cohorts possibly, but not as a general rule.
 
I'm from the same state as that speaker, NC. I have kids in the schools here. I know that, as a parent, I am only so capable of teaching my children things. I know that as a parent, even with my husband and others, we still won't be able to teach our children as much as they can learn at school. I also know that not all parents are as capable as we are of teaching their children even the basics.

Look at Finland and how they teach their kids. They are considered one of the top education countries in the world.
