TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Department of Education on Monday defied a recent ruling from a state judge and leveled its first sanctions against school board members who rejected the DeSantis administration’s orders on local mask mandates.
State officials withheld monthly salaries from board members in Alachua and Broward counties who supported the mask requirements, marking a major turning point in the weekslong fight over face coverings in schools.

Political news seems to keep rolling out of Florida -

The State Dept of Education head, Richard Corcoran (a DeSantis cohort), is openly defying the recent court order striking down DeSantis' 'no mask' mandate, and is exacting punishment.

I earlier reported that due to tumbling poll numbers, DeSantis was publicly divorcing himself from the 'no mask' mandate, delegating Corcoran as his 'hatchet man' in regards to the mask mandate, and now pivoting to becoming the 'treatment center' governor! It appears my source was right!

The anti-abortion party, standing up for the right to make a medical decision.

Yeah, ok...

You know, I really wouldn't be surprised if this becomes just another taker state ploy, thanks to Biden doing the right thing (aka, helping make up the lack of funding). Any time there's some kind of urgent public issue and Democrats say we should do X,Y,Z, they'll oppose it for the sake of opposing it. That's already the case. But then on top, they'll threaten to cut off the funding for anything that complies with whatever it is the Democrats should be done. The Democrats in power, realizing that even more harm to the public will result from saying "meh, let the voters decide", will pick up the funding slack. They'll do this with anything they can, ghoulishly using the "other side's" desire to do the right thing for their own selfish gain.

And bit by bit, taker states will in this manner take even more blue state money from the feds.

ie,

Etc. It's been the case for quite a while that red states get a lot more back from the feds than blue states. Meaning they're siphoning money from blue states via federal tax and spend. McConnell's Kentucky is one of the all-time taker states.

What I believe is happening in political terms (as touched-on in my OP commentary), is DeSantis will - behind the scenes - still exert pressure on the school boards via his Dept of Ed head, forcing Biden to address the issue. In fact, Biden already has - as he had DOJ file suit against FL.

This of course allows DeSantis to divorce himself from being hands-on with the 'no mask' issue, but yet allows him to elevate himself by 'defending' against Biden, in preparation for 2024. And all the while at the local level he can better avoid heat over the masks, yet can still embrace his/Trump base via his Dept of Ed guy.

It's actually quite ingenious, though not uncommon in my local politics. That's why I immediately recognized it.

I'm sure they have plenty of ICU beds.

Salary forfeiture! He took their salaries! They're not getting paid!

This is going to blow up and fail evne worse than it already has

once again .. imagine how far we might be in this country if Donnie didnt make this political.

This mentality is very much akin to those who refuse to leave their homes in the face of an immenent hurricane, and then require public resources to rescue them from their rooftops, endangering first responders in the process. Whatever their excuse might be for not going inland to a shelter before the storm, seems all the more ridiculous when rescuers pluck them from their half-destroyed homes and bring them to shelters anyway.

And the taxpayer foots the bill for those rescue and relief efforts.

Now the federal government an the Department of Education needs to punish Florida. I am sure they get a lot of federal subsidies.

Unfortunately, as the new variants raised their ugly heads, the pandemic has turned endemic. It will join the other coronavirus flus that are endemic, for which many of us get annual vaccines. I don't think there was any way to stop it - no matter what we did as a country. We can't stop global mutation, nor keep it out. We're, for better or worse, one humanity.

However you are right, in that - as a country - we could have done way better for ourselves.

I do worry about the animus I'm seeing from the relatively well vaccinated Left, applied to the much less vaccinated Right. I get why the anger's there, and I slip into it myself. We're all Americans, but the chips are down & we're turning on each other. Sadly.

I see punitive damages added to the awards the district will get. If some kid dies...potential involuntary manslaughter charges as well.

I saw a startling example of the bolded, way back during a catastrophic Mississippi River overflow sometime maybe in the early nineties:

A women lost her house to the river, and on national TV claimed this was 4th time she lost her property, and she badly needed the relief (quickly!), as in prior times, to 'start over'!

And I couldn't help but wonder shy she would stay, time after time. 'Easy money', was my thought.

Some how this is lost on too many

I dont get it, ill never get it. Not the anger anyway .. not the angry over simply GETTING the shot or WEARING a mask. Its beyond dumb.

i mean assaulting employees and teachers and vandalizing places that require masks . . . . . why are 40 year old children are doing this stuff ill have no idea. That is definitely sad.

I just saw a tiktok today of a friend mocking the vaccine saying she'll never get it because it totally changes your DNA, it skipped over animal trials and its killed 4000 people 🤦‍♂️

such a sad thing indeed

if a person chooses not to get it .. . fine by me but spreading misinformation is PART of the problem and that person has to understand they may lose access to something just like its always been🤷‍♂️

But that would be a political (& ethical) loser. Because you'd be punishing the very voters one needs.

Is there a way to donate to these schools or these school boards as a form of support for them? Make it very public.

Yes, pandemic response is a team sport!

Lots of anger on both sides, Agent J.

As we all fall deeper & deeper into mitigation again, I find my anger growing with the unvaccinated - too. I accept I cannot, I will not, force them. But, that doesn't mean I'm not unhappy they won't get onboard!

What a strange story to bring up abortion. After checking, Florida also requires parental consent for minors to get an abortion. At least in this instance, reserving the judgment to the parents is consistent, even if you don't like it.

I wouldn't doubt someone already started a go-fund-me page.

Except it isn't consistent. Parents can't decide to defy the school when it comes to lice infestation and actions there. Parents cannot decide to defy the school when it comes to dress code. That isn't their choice.

unhappy, yes but i dont get to anger i just shake my head at the stupidity of "most" of them.

hopefully, it doesn't happen but if their stupidity conintues it will just mean less and less access to stuff for them

Off topic, but I was utterly aghast when abortions became available to minors without parental validation. Then, my public school system promoted abortions & assisted the kids getting them - through the school nurse! For minors! Geezus Krist on a Kracker! How bad can it get?

Oh, I'm angry alright - every time I go through excessive mitigation because of them, which is basically in everything I do in my daily life. I'm not crazy angry, but I am pissed we're regressing rather than moving forward. I wanted to be (relatively) done with this!

THAT part is the worse for sure and I agree earlier in the year it totally looked like we'd be normal by thanksgiving

It looks like some people/groups may be planning them, but were waiting to get the pushback from the government.

I'm not sure how the government can stop the sites.

It might take some structuring to get the assistance to those that were financially injured, but I'm sure a decent lawyer or accountant could figure it out.

If you can't give the money directly to the recipients, give it to their immediate family members. There's always a way.
