Florida bill would require bloggers who write about the governor and legislators to register with the state

The reasoning by the sponsor seems to be that since lobbyists (paid talkers) are required to be registered in order to 'talk' why not those bloggers who are paid to 'write?'

Objections to the proposal are fair enough.
But rather than lazily call it 'fascism' why not explain why 'writing' has more 1st amendment protection than 'talking?'
Lobbyists are paid to influence the people who write the laws by any means necessary. Behind closed doors.

Blogger are opinion writers, sort of jr. Journalists.

DeSantis is so insecure. No kind of leader material

It doesn't sound like this bill would stand against a legal challenge anyway, so it's likely not going anywhere. I do wonder what State Sen. Brodeur thinks about dark money to political campaigns since that's a far bigger threat to political transparency than bloggers.
He has already introduced and signed tons of legislation that wasn't legal and was blocked....he doesn't care...

It is fascism...lobbyists aren't exercising free speech they are lobbying politicians to get laws passed on behalf of others....a blogger is more closely aligned to news, journalists and opinion writers. He is only requiring those who write negatively about HIM or Republicans to register...not those who write about Democrats.

Republicans are the party of GIAGANTIC government.

Okay - everyone here shrieking "FREEEEEEDOM!" like you're a MAGA William Wallace because newspapers decided they don't want to carry Dilbert anymore - THIS is what threatening the 1A looks like.

**** this fascist crap and anyone who supports it.

If you're a decent and sane human being make sure you have conversations with younger people about what's going on.

If you're a republican from Florida please stay away from young people.

Seems like the GOP in FL are determined to sink DeSantis' bid for the White House.

This is the future that righties want. The destruction of the free press. Emphasis on the word free, as in unencumbered.

It is a blatant attempt at intimidation and censorship.

It tracks with DiSantis’ fascist tendancies.

It isn’t as all “lazy” to call efforts by elected officials to intimidate and censor reporting and blogging. It’s the first thing every fascist does.

”writing and saying”????? You seem to be getting started with the parsing games already.

What evidence do either of you have that DeSantis supports this bill?
Come on... nothing is put forward without DeSantis approval. Now he might not sign it, because the pollsters tell him, but the GOP in Florida does nothing without the approval of the capo.

This isn't hurting him. Only thing in DeSantis' way is the Drumpfkampf.

There is a real appetite for racial and Confederate revanchism. Please don't underestimate it.
I don't at all. It is quite apparent here and elsewhere. However, I firmly believe most want to see the end to this divisive, tribal rhetoric and move forward not constantly revisit past grievances.

80 million Americans had 5 years to observe Trump, and came back to the table for seconds.

Apples and oranges. Lobbyists are paid to directly influence policymakers. Bloggers write opinions for general consumption.

Do we have newspaper opinion writers register with the government?

The law would be blantantly unconstitutional.

Yes, it's true. However, to my point more came out to push back on that. Additionally, I think the midterms showed that Americans are fed up with rehashing old grievances.

What evidence do either of you have that DeSantis supports this bill?
1. A member of his own party wrote the bill. 2. When given the opportunity, DeSantis did not oppose or condemn the bill.

I suspect he's waiting to see which way the wind blows on this one. If his base likes it, so does DeSantis. Just like all the other laws he's signed and then were ruled unconstitutional. It's the act of taking a stand that makes his fans' dicks hard. Constitutionality be damned.
