They should be required to identify first, Police, stop or I'll shoot!
 
From your first comment. The first cop who encountered them told them to stop a few times and I'm sure they realized it was a cop pointing a gun at them.
He should have included, or I'll shoot!
 
It depends on situation. They have to prove the person was a danger to them or the community (as in threat to life, not simply property). I note that they claim he went for a gun. If true, they are legally justified.

 
From what I hear about pro second amendment folks, you only pull out your weapon if you intend to shoot it, no?
In civilian life I've pulled my weapon several times but never had a need to shoot it.

Why would you draw a weapon you do not intend to use?

Were you trying to escalate the situation by adding a threat of deadly violence?

To either prevent an act of violence or be the one who walks away should the attacker refuse to.
